3 Believable Harry Potter Fan Theories (That Have Been Debunked by J.K. Rowling Herself)

By  |

I assume that, like me, you’re obsessed with Harry Potter. But what’s one to do when the prequel trilogy is so far off and there’s no new Potter stuff to devour? Why, read crazy fan theories about the books, of course! Heck, you could even come up with your own fan theories! But beware, you might get shot down by J.K. Rowling herself, as these Harry Potter fans found out.

Draco is a Werewolf

THE EVIDENCE: There is an amazingly detailed list of evidence on the blog called — what else —, but the gist of it has to do with Draco’s behavior in the later books. But there’s also the fact that Draco is NOT a Death Eater. As the writers of DracoMalfoyIsAWerewold explain:

“Voldemort says, ‘Maybe you can babysit the cubs’, to Draco when the Death Eaters find out that Remus and Tonks are having a baby. This is a throwaway if he is not a werewolf.”

They speculate that, maybe Draco and Snape are close because Draco needs Wolfsbane Potion. They even have a good reason as to why it’s never revealed, she needed to make cuts and decided to focus on Neville instead. (Good call.)

But there may be another reason the fact that Draco Malfoy was a werewolf was never revealed — DRACO MALFOY ISN’T A WEREWOLF! Despite the well-thought out theory, J.K. Rowling put a hilarious kibosh on it with this Tweet:

What what? Snape’s a vampire? I need to get on this theory ASAP (even if it’s not true).

Ron is Dumbledore

 harry potter theories

THE EVIDENCE: A forum on one of the bigger Harry Potter forums broke this theory the eff down, so make yourself a cup of hot cocoa and get ready for some good reading. The theory suggests that Dumbledore is, in fact, a time-traveling Ron Weasley, as evidenced by their similar appearance, their mutual love of sweets, and the fact that Dumbledore just knows EVERYTHING. But the real crux of the theory is this:

“JKR doesn’t simply use these concepts and toss them aside — she recycles. In PoA, we are introduced to the concept of time travel with the Time Turner. So far, we have yet to find another example. It would be unlike JKR to introduce us to something (especially something so big) and not bring it back into the plot with even greater significance. She has given us a subtle reminder of time travel with the time room in the Department of Mysteries in OotP. In a 2000 interview, when asked if Harry would travel in time again, JKR’s answer was ‘Not telling!’ Time travel is coming back… and it will be instrumental to the plot. What does this have to do with Ron, Dumbledore and the chess game? Everything.  Ron, our loyal Knight, will become a time traveler. He will be sent back in time to some point in the 19th century to live out the rest of his days at Albus Dumbledore, our venerable King.”

I love this simple takedown after all the time fans spent writing about it. Rowling really is a master of words.

The Dursleys are cruel because they’ve been exposed to a Horcrux for a decade.

THE EVIDENCE: According to Redditor ChirstieIsBored:

“It is shown in the last harry potter book (and technically the chamber of secrets as well), that horcruxes warp your mind while in your possession. They corrupt you into an bitter, grumpy, little prick over time. The locket turned the main trio against each other over a few weeks, the diary almost made Ginny resurrect the dark lord over the course of the year.

Harry technically turned into an horcrux himself after Voldemort tried to kill him after killing his parents. He was then given to the dursleys who ‘cared’ for him for the next 11 years in the close confines of their home. Ignoring the fact that Petunia was afraid of magic in the first place, this could bring up the possibility that Harry is responsible for their cruelness. Slowing turning them bitter as a result of the horcrux imbedded inside of him.”

It’s a good theory. The only problem is, Rowling is on record TAKING IT DOWN!

THE DEBUNKING: There’s a much simpler reason for the Dursleys’ Harry hatred — Vernon felt humiliated by Harry’s lookalike dad, James.

“James was amused by Vernon, and made the mistake of showing it. Vernon tried to patronize James, asking what car he drove. James described his racing broom. Vernon supposed out loud that wizards had to live on unemployment benefit. James explained about Gringotts, and the fortune his parents had saved there, in solid gold. Vernon could not tell whether he was being made fun of or not, and grew angry. The evening ended with Vernon and Petunia storming out of the restaurant, while Lily burst into tears and James (a little ashamed of himself) promised to make things up with Vernon at the earliest opportunity.”

Thanks, James! Maybe should have handled that before you got killed by He Who Shall Not Be Named and left your son in the hands of the guy you totally burned!

The moral of this article is that J.K. Rowling has all the answers, so don’t even try to outsmart her. Also, she rules. Which fan theory did you want to be true? Let me know on Twitter or in the comments below!
