The Time I Was BETRAYED by the Cruelest NPC in Pokemon History

By  |

Everyone loves Pokémon, but no one talks about the sociopath that lurks inside… this is their story.

It was a dark and stormy day in 2006. I was a young boy, my room illuminated by the screen of my Nintendo DS. I was playing my favorite game, Pokémon Pearl. Everything was going well — I had six badges and I was making my way to Snowpoint City. I explored the town talking to everyone I came across, and for the most part it was pleasant. That is until… I met her.

Her name? Mindy. Mindy is a mysterious NPC alone on the top of a snowy mountain, talking to anyone who walked into her home. But there was something different about her. She was looking to trade a Pokémon– nay, not just any Pokémon. A Haunter. That’s right, a Haunter. If she trades away that Haunter, it will evolve into a Gengar — my all time favorite Pokémon.

Mindy wanted to trade her Haunter for a Medicham (the fool). But if Mindy wanted a Medicham, I decided I would find Mindy a Medicham. I begin to trek the snowy peaks and captured a Medicham after an hour of searching and nicknamed him “BUTT” because I am hilarious. It was a tireless journey, but it will be worth it once I have my hands on that sweet, sweet Gengar.

I wandered back into Mindy’s house, ready for my reward. She said to me “By any chance, do you have a Pokemon called MEDICHAM? If you do, would you like to trade your MEDICHAM for my HAUNTER?” You bet I do, Mindy. You bet I do. Let’s freaking do this.

We link up, I send away BUTT, and watch that Haunter fall into my hands. Trade complete. But something is off. There is no cutscene of Haunter evolving. The evolution must be after the NPC dialogue. That must be it.

WHY MINDY WHY. WHO HURT YOU? WHO MADE YOU DO THIS? WHY DO YOU FIND JOY IN MY PAIN?

Mindy, I don’t know where you are, or why you are like this. Just know that you hurt me.
