5 Celebs Who’ve Open Up About Struggling With Anxiety
If you’ve ever struggled with anxiety or panic attacks, you are definitely not alone. The following celebs have opened up about their struggles with the sometimes debilitating disorder, and they’re all proof that even those who seem to have everything can struggle with mental illness…
Emma Stone has opened up about her frequent panic attacks when she was younger, and explained how acting became therapy in an interview with Wall Street Journal. “There’s something about the immediacy of acting. You can’t afford to think about a million other things,” Stone said. “You have to think about the task at hand. Acting forces me to sort of be like a Zen master: What is happening right in this moment?”
Kristen Bell has been very open about taking medication for her anxiety and depression, and she’s admitted that she’s taken medication for it since she was young. She told Off-Camera in 2016, “I still take it today and I have no shame in that, because my mom had said to me, ‘If you start to feel this way, talk to your doctor, talk to a psychologist, see how you want to help yourself.”
Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson has been outspoken about her experience with panic attacks on the show’s set. She told Health magazine, “I was on Xanax for a long time. It helped, but I decided I was going to be able to self-medicate through meditation, working out, sleeping, eating healthy and drinking more water… I have this meditation app on my phone. I use it at least three times a week.”
“The Fault in Our Stars” author spoke to Reddit in 2015 about his mental health struggles and how he copes with his anxiety: “I just have to integrate it into my life, as I would for any chronic illness. That can be difficult during periods like this one where work stuff is extremely public and extremely intense, but it helps tremendously that this is something I’m choosing to do.”
NBA player Royce White had to take a leave of absence in the 2012-2013 season to deal with his anxiety and other mental health issues. He explained to Men’s Journal in 2013, “People ask me about anxiety — I tell them to get diagnosed and get help, you can’t just take Tylenol to deal with it. Being able to be level with people, being honest about your problem — that is a huge help.”
