Did You Know These 8 Songs Were Actually Covers?

By  |

Famous artists do covers of famous songs all the time. But sometimes they do covers of not-so-famous songs, and then I actually think those songs are written by them or for them. That seems wrong for some reason. Must suck to have your song become popular only when someone else records it. TOO BAD ORIGINAL ARTISTS! Here’s a look at 8 popular songs that were actually covers. Some of which are quite shocking I might add. Maybe mind-blowing. I’ll let you decide.

If I Were A Boy by Beyonce

Original Artist: BC Jean

THIS ICONIC BEYONCE SONG IS NOT BY BEYONCE!?! Beyonce recorded the song after it was rejected by BC Jean’s record company. Jean was intially upset that Beyonce was releasing it as a single, but then I guess she got the piles of money from Beyonce’s version and was too busy Scrooge McDucking it too give an EFF anymore. That’s what I like to think anyway.

Torn by Natalie Imbruglia

Original Artist: Ednaswap

This little ditty was one of the biggest hits of the 90s and made Imbruglia a huge star, before she became a one hit wonder. A hit that wasn’t even hers. Poor Ednaswap! Torn should have been their one hit. ‘No-hit wonder, whose song was a hit for someone else’ is way worse than one-hit wonder.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper

Original Artist: Robert Hazard

Kind of takes on a whole new meaning when sung by a dude, huh? I still like the Glee cover the best. It’s the only thing I like from Glee, I promise!! It was good and sweet and sad. Now, I’m gonna probably have to watch it like five times in a row and cry. I’m STILL COOL THOUGH! Right? *crickets

Don’t Cha by The Pussycat Dolls

Original Artist: Tori Alamaze

This song was written by Cee Lo Green for the ex-makeup artist and it was a huge flop, leading to Alamaze being dropped from her label. Then the song made The Pussycat Dolls stars. Thanks, universe. I’ll never recover from the sight of my four-year-old niece singing this. Glad those pussycats were finally ‘put down’ so to speak.

It’s My Life by No Doubt

Original Artist: Talk Talk

I actually knew the original, since I’m a huge fan of 80s music, but I was still surprised that more people didn’t know it was a cover since it was a relatively big hit. I guess it just fit so well with No Doubt’s 80s-infused sound. Now more importantly, when are we getting a new No Doubt record!? All originals, thank you! We’ll give Gwen 6 more months of maternitry leave and then we want her back in the studio!

Tainted Love by Soft Cell

 Original Artist: Gloria Jones

Another 80s classic, was actually a 60s classic! This sounds cool all Mad Men’ed out. I might actually prefer it to the cover. I just wanna listen to this while drinking martinis in a groovy bar. Join me when you turn 21, won’t you?

Valerie by Amy Winehouse

 Original Artist: The Zutons

Jeez, I miss Amy Winehouse. She was effing brilliant. This is a great song and The Zutones did a fine job with it, but anything Amy touched, she owned. Now I’m depressed that there will be no new Amy Winehouse music. Really hoping some lost recordings show up soon!

Emotion by Destiny’s Child

 Original Artist: Samantha Song

Beyonce is all about those damn covers! Maybe Beyonce isn’t nearly as great as everyone acts like she is?  Okay, she’s pretty great. The last thing I need is to be accused of being a Beyonce hater. Pretty sure you get kicked off the planet for those kinds of views.

Which one were you surprised by? Let me know @desijedeikin.
