3 Fascinating Harry Potter Fan Theories
So what’s a girl to do when she’s feeling kind of desperate for more Harry Potter stories and J.K. Rowling refuses to endulge her every whim? Why she delves into the world of fan thoeries and tries to make hay out of what was already written. Fan theories aren’t as bad to read as fan fiction, right? Like they have some basis in reality and are trying to make things cooler, whereas fan fiction often tries to make things creepier. Just trying to make myself feel better. Well, luckily for me, there are lots of juicy, seemingly well-researched fan theories out there. Here’s three of my favorties.
It was all in Harry’s head
Theory: Harry Potter was an abused child who created the fantasy of the wizarding world where he was special, as a coping device.
I know a lot of lame fan theories fall into the ‘it was all in his head/coma’ catagory. Yes, that’s a legit category. But in this case, I think it all makes a lot of sad, depressing sense. I mean my childhood wasn’t even half as bad as Harry’s and I made up all kinds of crap. So here’s the jist….His aunt and uncle are making him live under the stairs, basically starving him and refusing to even acknowledge that he’s a human being with feelings and needs. That’s like Oprah book club level of abuse. Then Harry is magically saved by Hagrid, and taken to a world where he is put on a pedastal as the ‘chosen one’. And he’s a wizard. He finally has power and respect, something he has never experienced.
BUT according to the theory, Harry still faces daily abuse. They point out his numerous trips to the school infirmary, with Muggle-ish injuries like broken bones. I’d expand upon that and say that it’s also interesting that Harry can’t use his magic outside of Hogwarts, leaving him vulnerable when he’s back at home. Maybe he has to justify why he doesn’t just Avada Kedavra Petunia and Vernon on the spot? This theory supposedly explains all of the inconsistancies in the book as well…afterall, as Harry slowly starves to death he can’t keep things straight. Holy friggin’ grim! Let’s move onto a happier theory. Well, at least a less grim one…
Harry Potter, the boy who lived…forever
Theory: In the prophecy it states that one must die at the hand of the other…which means Harry potter can never die because Voldmort is no longer around to kill him.
This one comes courtesy of Harry Potter uber-fan HP Wombat. So basically it wasn’t just that Harry was the only one who could kill Voldemort, Voldemort was the only one who could kill Harry as well. While Harry was just looking to kill Voldemort, Voldemort was looking to kill Harry and gain immortality. The worst part is Harry can no longer die, which means he will never be reunited with all of his loved ones in the afterlife. Better break out that Mirror of Erised. The OP even wraps it up with a nice little bow…Harry Potter is now and forever ‘The boy who lived.’ Way to make a positive phrase all kinds of devastating, OP. Sorry this wasn’t a really less grim one. But I promise the next one is!
Harry Potter and Hermione Granger are secret siblings.
Theory: Hermione Granger is the secret daughter of Lily and James Potter.
Okay, so the theory goes that Hermione is the secret older sister of Harry Potter and she was given up for adoption. There’s no DNA test for fictional characters, so obviously the info is all specualtion at best, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Some points made in the theory, Hemione knows the truth and that’s why she’s such a ‘know it all’ she’s competing with her brother ‘the chosen one’. She also often speaks for Harry and knew a lot about him before going to Hogwarts. The reason it stays a secret? Because she has Lily’s blood, she is an important aspect of Harry’s protection, so it makes sense that this would be info that no one wants Voldemort to know.
Another person has one-upped the ‘Hermione is Harry’s secret sister’ theory by comparing it to Star Wars. And it’s kind of hilarious. Harry, Hermione and Ron= Luke, Leia and Han. Dumbledore=Obi-Wan, and my favorite, Dean Thomas=Lando Calrissian. There are more funny comparisons in the link, so check it out. The Star Wars connection definitely lends even more ‘credibility’ to the secret sister theory, I guess. It also makes me extremely relieved now that Harry and Hermione never hooked up. Well, I guess there was that one kiss. I mean that was awkward, but not secret incest awkward. Right?
