HBO CONFIRMS Game of Thrones Prequel Series So Start Brushing Up on Your Night King Lore ASAP
HBO has green-lit a pilot for a Game of Thrones prequel series, because they know we’re going to need something to get over the loss of our favorite Sunday night activity — watching Game of Thrones and immediately writing about it/ talking about it/ meme-ing about it (even though it’ll still be on for another year).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Game of Thrones prequel will depict “the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.”
And, of course, as they do, the GoT fandom has already begun to dissect any plot hints that might be tucked into the description. Many are theorizing that the prequel will revolve around the legend of the Night King, whose reign lead to the straight-up abysmal era known as “The Long Night”.
HBO’s intriguing-yet-vague logline for the show all but confirms this theory, as it states, “Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”
Wait…it’s not the story we think we know? Because we think we know things were really, really grim back then, which means this series would be even more depressing than GoT itself. Frankly, we hope it won’t be the story we know, because we cannot handle that kind of anxiety every Sunday night right now.
The GoT prequel series will take place thousands of years before to the current show, and George RR Martin will help develop the series. Meanwhile, Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service writer Jane Goldman is writing the pilot. HBO has said that any Game of Thrones spin-off wouldn’t air for at least a year after the final season of the current series, which means it’ll probably be two or three years before we see anything from this prequel series. So start drinking water, stop texting and driving, and get some more veggies on your plate, because HBO just gave us a future to look forward to.
