Somehow, the ‘Pokémon’ Opening Hadn’t Been Recreated in ‘Grand Theft Auto 5’ Until TODAY
Pop-Tarts and ice cream. Men in Black and 21 Jump Street. Kanye West and The Legend of Zelda. There are some mash-ups that are so obvious when you see them, you wonder what took the participants so long to get together. And this is where we find ourselves again today, as YouTuber Merfish has combined the worlds of Pokémon and Grand Theft Auto, recreating the anime’s famous opening song about being the very best in the open world crime simulator. Take a look:
Merfish casts various Grand Theft Auto 5 characters as Pokémon characters, but those decisions begin and end with Trevor as Ash. Who else but the vicious psychopath could play a man who captures animals, trains them to fight, and sends them out against other animals. We kicked Michael Vick out of the NFL for that, for christ’s sake.
And here’s something I learned about myself today — that Pokémon theme song pumps me up no matter what. Even in this context, where I’m seeing the heartwarming lessons of friendship and dedication enacted by bank robbers in turquoise face paint while burning each other alive, I was still like “I’m gonna go for a run today! Yeah!”
