Top 10 Japanese Monster Movies of All Time

By  |

Japan is responsible for making some of the greatest monster movies known to man. Godzilla is truly the greatest monster ever invented. He's good sometimes and bad other times. You just never know if he's going to help the human race or attack us. Who is your favorite Japanese monster?

10. Mothra Vs. Godzilla!

The movie starts when Mothra's gigantic egg, having been swept away from Mothra Island by a hurricane, washes ashore in Japan… The Japanese take care of the egg and study it until Mothra comes looking for her babies… then Godzilla has to fight not only Mothra but her babies as well… and let me say that there's only room on the island of Japan for one monster.

9. Gamera: Destroy All Planets

Gamera the Flying Turtle's brains is basically hacked by evil aliens, but two innocent children free him from the spell. Gamera then returns to fight the evil alien monster and show him who is the real master of his own mind!

8. Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla

An army of extraterrestrial apes create Godzilla's mechanical doppelganger who is actually stronger than Godzilla… Godzilla then has to seek out the aid of Okinawan monster god King Seeser. That's right so basically Godzilla calls his therapist.

7. Ghidrah, The Three Headed Monster

A meteorite unleashes the monstrous fury of a three-headed beast on Tokyo! Our old pal Mothra unites with her one former enemies Godzilla and Rodan to battle the extraterrestrial threat. Proving that three monsters are always better than one with three stupid heads.

6. Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidora: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (aka GMK)

This one is awesome. It’s one of the most insane and bizarrely original Godzilla movies I have ever seen. It takes everything you think you know about Godzilla and turns it upside down, shakes it around and throws it all over the floor and makes scrambled eggs out of it. Prepare to have your mind blown wide open.

5. Gamera vs. Monster X

A humongous creature attacks Japan during the World Fair and our old pal Gamera the Flying Turtle creature has to save us all!!! The evil monster then injects Gamera with its offspring and a research team must take an inner-space craft into Gamera's body to eliminate the parasite before it destroys Gamera. Thankfully the mission is a success and Gamera lives to fight evil again!

4. Godzilla Vs. The Smog Monster

Earth's pollution actually creates a brand new monster. Hedorah… aka the smog monster. Hedorah tries to destroy Japan and then battles with Godzilla spewing his poisonous gas into the atmosphere to further the damage the planet. An important lesson about keeping it green folks. Give a hoot… unless you want Hedorah to come to your town!

3. X From Outer Space

A spaceship is dispatched to land on Mars and investigate the existence of UFOs. They come in contact with alien spores that, when brought back to Earth, soon grow into a giant chicken-lizard-alien evil type monster that tramples all over our good friends in Japan. If you like old school Japanese monster movies with a little bit of sci-fi thrown in, this is the movie for you!

2. Godzilla: Tokyo SOS!

Mechagodzilla is still being repaired from his last battle when Godzilla attacks Tokyo once again… then Mothra joins in on the fun, and the Japanese Prime Minister has no choice but to launch the still damaged and not quite finished Mechagodzilla into action to fight Godzilla and Mothra. Look out Japan, this one is going to be the battle of the century! Why doesn't Japan just get rid of all these monsters?

Which brings us to…

1. Destroy All Monsters

This is my favorite Japanese monster movie… Aliens take control of all of the Earth's beloved temperamental monsters and use them to try to destroy the entire human race. Not so fast Aliens! Godzilla doesn't buy into their bullcandy and destroys the alien base, saving the day. I guess monsters aren't so bad after all.
