How about it?

To get rid of the clogging of the site from hundreds of news stories posted by users, I decided to make a thread where people can post and dicuss news. I hate how the site is turning into the evening news for me. Instead of having one thread with 20 replies for each news story, let's post and discuss news here!

Post away.

Awesome idea.
Rodro
Good Idea. However it wont work D:.
Its like my "Have Something to share?". It was pinned at all, and people still made new threads about something that could be easily posted in the thread.

Maybe it will survive if it doesnt get pinned haha
Leepay
If mods delete news threads and tell people to post them here it'll work.
Rodro
Hopefully. Becasue Im Seriously tired of watching sick news threads everywhere

i like the idea it will be like a newspaper

im just waiting for people to post

so please post

(i would but nothing is happening down here)
fredman555
foobs tried this before...

i vote against this. whats the point of a forum is everything is in all 1 thread?
NUBS
Foobs, Gripster, and myself tried doing this before. It didn't work. I don't exactly remember why, but it just wouldn't work.

I'll leave this open for a while though, just to get everyone's input about the idea.

and about my opinion I think its a good idea. Instead of people making threads of news they can just post it here. I think you should give it another chance.
Yander
Yeah, Agree'd. If everyone has an intresting news story to share, It's not to hard to read the title.
billay
I like the idea, It would help lose some clutter. The only problem though would be some members may not use the thread.
fredman555
you guys are missing the point of a forum. a forum is a discussion gruop- an echangement of ideas. having this thread will eliminate discussion and will just result in people posting pages and pages of long articles

if this thread is made official it will be the first time i have ever seen it on a forum of any kind
Kag
yeah but fred it depends on the sort of news
if its liek 9/11 news, you can make a thread about it, but if its liek AW LAWRD a kid got mauled, it doesnt deserve its own thread.

i like the idea.

still, id rather go to a forum that has lots of topics with little discussion than a forum that has the exact same threads everyday for over 2 months.

Indeed.
Cirrow
Its not going to work, people aren't going to click a page back and read 20 replies to find the latest news article everyones talking about.
Leepay
Except half the news people post is something bad happening to a kid and I really don't care. I know it sounds cruel and I do feel bad but what discussion comes from it?

Is violence against kids bad? durrrr

Fred doesn't like the idea because half the time he is the one posting the news.
Foobs
I tried this a long time ago and everyone bitched. HOW IS IT A GOOD IDEA NOW!?

This is a dilemma. Yes we can cut out people pointless news threads.

But this thread will be clogged up with pointless news articles. And people discussing 2 articles at once. Which shouldn't happen in a thread.

Same applies to Jt's letter you posted. Many people had suggested the idea before. I was one of them but people said it wouldn't work. Now more people are for it. It's all about timing.

The news threads are getting ridiculous.

Here we go:

Would-be robber stays for wine, hugs

QUOTE
WASHINGTON - Police on Capitol Hill are baffled by an attempted robbery that began with a handgun put to the head of a 14-year-old girl and ended in a group hug.

It started around midnight on June 16 when a group of friends was finishing dinner on the patio of a District of Columbia home, authorities and witnesses said. That's when a hooded man slid through an open gate and pointed a handgun at the girl's head.

"Give me your money, or I'll start shooting," he said, the witnesses told The Washington Post.

Everyone froze, they said, but then one guest spoke up.

"We were just finishing dinner," Cristina Rowan, 43, told the man. "Why don't you have a glass of wine with us?"

The intruder had a sip of their Chateau Malescot St-Exupery and said, "Damn, that's good wine."

The girl's father, Michael Rabdau, 51, told him to take the whole glass, and Rowan offered him the bottle. The would-be robber, with his hood down, took another sip and a bite of Camembert cheese and put the gun in his sweatpants.

Then the story got even more bizarre.

The man with the gun apologized, the witnesses told the Post.

"I think I may have come to the wrong house," he said. "Can I get a hug?"

Rowan stood up and wrapped her arms around the man and the four other guests followed.

The man walked away a few moments later with the crystal wine glass in hand. No one was hurt, but once he was gone, the group went inside, locked the door and called 911.

Police said Friday that the case was strange but true. Investigators have not located a suspect.

"We've had robbers that apologize and stuff, but nothing where they sit down and drink wine," Cmdr. Diane Groomes said. "The only good thing is they would be able to identify him because they hugged them."

That article is awesome. I'm so glad I know that it happened.

I've always imagined that if I were held at gun point, I would somehow reason the guy out of it. In my head I'm calm and collected, and the robber actually listens to what I have to say.

But I know that if actually happened, not only would he shoot me when didn't initially give him what he wanted, but I also would just start crying and peeing myself as threw everything I had on the ground in front of me.

Perhaps the robber would then leave me and my things in disgust...

EDIT:

As for my thoughts on this being the one thread for all news:

It seems like a good idea because there is a lot of crap to sift through, both news and just a ton of different threads, so maybe it is now time for this plan to be taken into effect.

However, maybe it can be further divided up. Like "Weird Happy News" and "Gross News" and "Stupid Celebrity News"...The mods and veterans can come up with the most appropriate genres of news.

225kmh

A BRITISH teenager, who filmed himself speeding at more than 140mph (225kmh), has been jailed for what experts described as 'among the most reckless pieces of driving' they had ever seen.

IPB Image
View of the highway from teen's car
Nathan Campbell, 18, used his handphone's video camera to film his driving.

The trainee mechanic recorded his speed by filming the dashboard dials as he drove his father's Toyota MR2 sports car down a highway, The Evening Standard reported.

He sent the clip to a friend, who in turn posted it on the popular video-sharing website, YouTube.

Prosecutor Sarah Statham told the court that Campbell was driving on the M65 between Colne and Blackburn in England when he was spotted by off-duty police officer Michael Holt.

He saw Campbell drive over the road shoulder to overtake another vehicle.

The red MR2 then came back onto the highway, forcing another car to swerve to avoid it.

It then went on to overtake several other vehicles.

Mr Holt took down the licence plate number of the speeding car. About a week later, he was told about the YouTube posting.

Campbell, who had passed his driving test after only eight lessons, had never received any highway driving lessons. He, however, had no previous convictions.

The YouTube clip showed the MR2's speedometer at 140mph. However, the court was told that there may have been a 20mph fault on it.

Campbell told the police when he was arrested that he hadn't sent the video to YouTube but to a friend who posted it on the website.

Campbell's lawyer, Mr Phillip Holden, said: 'It hardly needs saying but this was an act of gross stupidity and something my client bitterly regrets.'

Judge Anthony Russell banned Campbell from driving for three years and ordered him to take an extended retest.

Why would you post a video of you doing something illegal on YouTube?
Nothing good will come of it.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and three other men could be sentenced to six years in prison and a fine of $350,000 (€254,000) for sponsoring dogfights. Aparently Vick started doing this in 2001, the year in which he was drafted to the Falcons. Not only did Vick sponsor these fights in which dogs were killed, he killed the dogs that weren't ready to fight.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Lindsay Lohan, under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, has turned herself in to police in connection with a Memorial Day weekend car crash.

Accompanied by her attorney, the 21-year-old actress surrendered at the Beverly Hills Police Department shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday to be fingerprinted and photographed, Officer Brian Ballieweg said.

Lohan's blood-alcohol level at the time of the crash was above .08, California's legal limit, said Ballieweg, who did not disclose how high it was. She is also under arrest on suspicion of misdemeanor hit and run, he said.

Lohan was released on her own recognizance. A court date was scheduled for August 24.

A message left early Friday with her publicist was not immediately returned.

The surrender was first reported by TV's "The Insider."

Lohan and two other adults were in her 2005 Mercedes SL-65 convertible when she lost control and crashed into a curb and shrubs on Sunset Boulevard on May 26, police said.

Lohan got into a second car and was driven to a hospital in nearby Century City for treatment of minor injuries, police said. The other people in her car were not hurt.

Officers received a 911 call about the accident and traced her to the hospital. Police said at the time she had been arrested for investigation of driving under the influence, though it wasn't formal until Thursday.

Last week, Lohan checked out of a rehabilitation center after a stay of more than six weeks. It was her second stint in rehab this year. She said in January she had checked into rehab for substance abuse treatment.
