This disgusts me sad.gif

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk7UxzaKVpQ

- Opposition from Canadians. 67% of Canadians support a ban on seal products.

- Opposition from other countries. Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Slovenia, France, Croatia, Italy, Mexico and Panama have either ended their trade in seal products or plan to.

- Opposition from consumers. Half a million individuals and over 3,500 restaurants, grocery stores and seafood distributors have signed the boycott of Canadian products.

- Effect of the boycott. Canadian seafood exports to the United States alone bring in about $2.5 billion to the Canadian economy, compared to roughly $12 million contributed by the seal hunt in 2007.

There is little economic reason to continue the commercial seal hunt and every reason to end it.

You have an unparalleled opportunity to protect Canada's economy and the seals. Please do everything in your power to stop the cruel and needless slaughter before it is too late

"The Canadian Marine Mammal Regulations, which govern the hunt, stipulate sealers may kill seals with wooden clubs, hakapiks (large ice-pick-like clubs) and guns. In the Gulf of St. Lawrence, clubs and hakapiks are the killing implement of choice, and in the Front, guns are more widely used." http://www.hsus.org/marine_mammals/protect...dian_seal_hunt/

"Of 71 random instances of seals being killed on film documented by HSUS, sealers failed to perform a test for unconsciousness prior to impaling seals on hooks and dragging them across the ice in 72 percent of cases. In 25 percent of those instances, the seals appeared to be responding to pain as they were hooked and dragged."

HEY!
Not all of us are bad, and not all of us support it.
67% in opposition, if you hadn't noticed.
They've been protesting it for YEARS, and there's been a huge decline in the profit gained from it.
Improvement? I think so.
Although its still occurring, there IS an effort to make it stop forever.

People only care about baby seals cuz they find them adorable. if it were frogs, or giant snails, people wouldnt give a shit.

Its just another chicken/deer/fish/rabbit/turkey.

Yes, I do think the ones clubbing seals have to be heartless fags, but eh, you gotta do what you can to bring bread to the tables when there is no other option.

Also, Inuit people have hunted them for centuries, its their tradition, and we should respect it, for some of the aforementioned things. There is also the red fox hunting, the tauromachy, and many more.

I signed a petition yesterday, I am against the way they are killed (not the hunt itself), but I am also against all the media shit they get everywhere.

In my opinion, the whole "they've been doing it for thousands of years"-reply is complete bullshit.

So what? Does that make it okay? There have also been murderers, rapists, etc. for thousands of years, so does that make it okay to kill, rape someone?

Also, back then, they didn't know certain things we know about animals. I'm sure a lot of people still think animals don't feel pain or don't have feelings..

However, i do agree with the other animals issue.. as i said :

I really think the first part of this reply is untrue, at least in my case. The spark for this thread was that the season just started, I know their are many other unjustifiable hunts going on in the world.

Chicken/deer/fish/rabbit/turkey are almost entirely used for food, as opposed to baby seals being murdered only for their fur. Their carcases are thrown back into the water.

What about thousands of Minks that get tortured and have to live in terrible conditions from the first day of their existence only to get slaughtered just for their fur?

Don't get me wrong, i'm totally against animal cruelty, but people shouldn't be so hypocrite. I bet most people who feel sorry for baby seals still buy products that have been tested on other beautiful animals..

Glad to hear it. Although i didn't mean you, i meant in general..

But lets be honest, most people only care about this because baby seals are cute. Cows often go through much more torture before their death, yet nobody gives a fuck about them because they get looked upon as dumb animals only here to feed us.

In the Canadian seal hunt which has a quota of 275,000 seals, all the carcases are thrown into the sea because there isn't a market for seal meat.

Even tho their fur is the main product obtained off them, over the last years, a lot of new industries have been born to fully take advantage of the products a seal can offer. Some of these new uses include pet food, suplplement oil and food in some restaurants in Canada and Russia.

I do not condone the inhuman and cruel way of killing them, however, I find the hunt reasonable and as something that must be done each year.
v-rex
Unfortunately, our government doesn't listen to the
petitions or protests about the hunt. It's ridiculous!
It's just a very frustrating position to be in, especially
with a prime minister who cares so little about the
environment and animals in it. To be honest though,
the only time i would agree with the hunt would be
if it was a cultural thing and every part of the seal
was used. I am against it because the fur is just being
used for capital gain. In no way is this hunt used to
sustain a family or community anymore.
