Full Version: student protest fucked by police

Recently my high school has been encouraging "going green"
and everyone was doing there part lving there lives and such

until one morning our school was covered with the "its comming" posters
it was rediculous there was at least 1000 peices of paper around our school (lockers, doors, windows, ect.)
and of course everyone starts to wonder what they are for
so people asked student council and they would tell no one

over the next week or so students AND TEACHERS started ripping down the posters and throwing them out
or people would write on the remaining ones
things like informing people about a party
or "the end of trees, thanks for wasting paper"

aside from writing on the "its comming" signs and ripping them down, many students though it was hypocritical for student council to be posting so many posters all over the school and wasting alot of paper with signs that no one cares about.
thats when my friend in grade 12 started the face book group stop the its comming posters save the trees!
the group was made to start a peacful protest against our school wasting paper
and since it was spirit month, every tuesday would be a different theme day (pajama day or beach day)
so to show our protest every tuesday every supporter of this group would wear green
my friend even handed out green strips of facric for kids who didnt have anything green

just a few of the supporters/organizers

with alot of kids wearing these green bandanas the principles at our school began to take notice
and took this protest as a new school gang (they called us "the green gang")
which the students found rediculous! the group did not support people writing on the posters at our school or ripping them down, everyone was just trying to send a message.

the starter of the group was suspended, and everyone was told that if we did not stop wearing our green bandanas or the green clothing that we would also be suspended and the police would get involved
well we had done nothing wrong ... so what did everyone do? instead of wearing green only on tuesdays, people wore them every day
and the police did get involved,
and when they questioned kids about why they were wearing green so much they simply replied i like the colour is that a crime
and well over 20 people were suspended because it was "opposition to authority"
and then when they threatened to kick out the creator of the group, he gave up, wrote one final post explaining what had happened
(http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=12737371203&topic=4588)

well everyone was outraged even more, and have not stopped showing their support
this was took place about a month ago and students are STILL wearing the green bandanas and "going green"
but since this has happened the ammount of paper used at our school has decreased
which shows that our protest did have an impact,
its just sad that students trying to make a difference in their school, gets turned around and said that it is a gang and is later shut down.

some pictures from around our school

To me, it sounds like "us vs. them" situation. My recommendation would have been to draft a mission statement, goals and planned activites of the Green Group and present it to the proper authority, whether that's the Student Council or the School Administration. Perhaps if you discussed this with Teachers who would sympathize with your cause, that could be very helpful in gaining support from the School.

Another idea would have been to contact the company that picks up the trash and find out if they have a recycling program that the school could participate in. They could even supply recycling bins for the paper, glass, aluminium and any other type of recyclable materials.

Instead of Green Bandanas, maybe a white shirt with the Green Recycle Logo on it and a message about recycling at your school. I'm sure you could find a local screen printer who might donate some of the cost and you could solicit donations, sponsers from companys or even proceeds from recycling that could be used to offset the cost of the shirts.

You can't blame the Police for doing their job. If the School Administation feels the activities are in conflect with their rules of conduct and dress, they have every legal right to enforce by whatever means is necessary to maintain control and order of those rules. You have to remember that the School has to abide by the rules, policies and laws of the School District, Board of Education, City and/or County, State and finally Federal.

You can't make this about Left-Wing vs. Right-Wing extremist type of view, you have to work with everyone getting a consensus to address this issue and come up with a workable solution.

Yes, the School Administration believed they were part of the Sinn Féin Party of Ireland, part of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), Green Bandana Brigade Gang rolleyes.gif

Our school had one of those so-called "gangs" as well, only the kids in this "gang" wore all white and white bandanas. No one knew for sure what they were doing it for, but the teachers automatically assumed it was "bad" and whatnot, so they gave everyone who wore white bandanas a detention. Blasted teachers and their power-hungry punishment sprees...

And I agree that all those papers around your school were a bit much.
usfcolby
I am sorry but I am sure some people in this green bandana gang were ripping down posters and stuff.

Besides, do you really think wearing green is going to make the school think "Oh boy, we should recycle our paper". No, they see a group of kids wearing bandanas and the first thing their going to think is gang symbols.

So if the goal was to help the environment through convincing the school to be less wasteful of paper than wearing green clothing does nothing to help further the goal. Approaching the teachers, and administration with your concerns may have actually gotten something in motion.

really? Since when has approaching the administration ever done anything. The student councils of every school are just a joke and they never do anything more then plan a couple of dances. If you can't protest peacefully then that only leaves one other option...

So you don't think if you approached the school administration with a compelling case that they would see it your way? Find out how much the paper for their printer, and the ink costs and spread it out over 1000 copies or however many copies they actually made. Then show them that they could save that amount of money by not wastefully copying things. Everybody sees dollar signs, so showing them the monetary impact would help. Thats just one of many approaches you could take.

well aren't you a fucking boy scout, the kids wore green, if you can't even choose the color of your shirt without upsetting the schools then maybe we should all move to the nazi Germany. I bet you'd love it there.

So I am a boy scout, that wants to move to Nazi Germany? Well see, the problem with that is I am against organizations like the Boy Scouts because I feel they force ideologies on impressionable young minds. There are also jewish people in my family's background, and Hitler was going after anyone with any semblance of jew in them, so in Nazi Germany I would likely be gassed or forced to live in inhumane conditions.

So I think you are wrong on both counts. But I provided a decent way for you to accomplish what you claim is the stated goal of the group that did this. Do I think you shouldn't be allowed to wear green shirts at all? No, but when your wearing green bandanas and doing gangster poses, and ripping down signs, and taking angsty pictures where your flipping off the school basically, then you can expect the school to raise some alarm. Obviously they are going to try to stop it, because they aren't psychic, they can't read your minds and see "Oh, they're wearing green, wow they must be trying to tell us to stop wasting paper in the name of helping the environment. That is the only possibly reason why a huge group of teenagers would start wearing green bandanas and take pictures where they're flipping the bird and doing gangster poses".

I don't know why I am wasting my time using logic with someone that is probably only a sophomore in high school and only believes in "sticking it to "the man"", instead of taking constructive actions towards a legitimate goal. Smosh.com isn't the place to use logic, so I apologize for that.
