For months now I have been helplessly searching for a digital camera that would fit my needs. I got really close to picking one a couple of weeks ago, though after looking at some sample shot's decided not to. So as most great minds do, I'm going to smosh. I know there are some big camera experts here, (looking at you Mr. Pink) and I can only hope that I can find one soon.
What I see in a good camera is this:
6-8 megapixels
$800 MAX
Digital
Low much shutter lag
Size does not matter to me, as long as it's a good camera. So if you know a good model that will fits these requirements please tell me here.
If you don't know a camera that fits this don't say, "I UZ A KAMARA, IZ GOOOD!!!11 TY IT!2!!" I don't want this to gather spam.
Also this has been deademery approved, so please don't close it instantly.
Thanks!

Do not give 800 bucks to a mexican.
I'd go for something Canon, and if you want something real good, 7megapixels or more.

The Canon EOS 350D, I think it's called the Digital Rebel XT in America. You should be able to pick one up at around your price limit, if not less.

I recommend NOT getting an 8 Megapixel for snapshot pics, even for the occasinal artistic shot. Its so detailed its extremely hard to get a pick without it being blurry (without a tripod, but I doubt you want to bring a tripod everywhere)

Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) is what i have.
-it's a digital SLR.
-1/4000th of a second fastest shutter speed.
-30 second maximum shutter speed.
-max aperture is f/3.5-5.6.
-built-in flash (which really isn't that good)
-comes with an 18-55mm lens.
-8.1 megapixel.
-auto-focus and manual focus.
-can shoot in RAW (uncompressed format)
i love the camera. i got it for 750 new a year ago (on ebay).
i think you can get them for around that price now too.
the only bad thing is that if you really want to zoom in then you need to buy another lens because the standard one is a wide to standard zoom lens.

they also make it in black.

You can get a pretty decent digital camera for $800 max. Now, the Canon EOS 20D is your best option... but that's gonna suck up all that money, and possibly more. The next best option, in my opinion, is the Nikon D70s. However, that's still kind of expensive if you're buying it brand new. But, if you're willing to buy off eBay, then you can get a D70s with a lens for under $800 no problem. You
might even find a Canon 20D w/ lens for under $800 on eBay, but I wouldn't count on it.
Another camera that you should look into is the
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50. 10.1 MP is awesome, although not the most important thing. The lens is a Leica, which is a company known for high quality glass, and the aperature/focus can be controlled like a regular 35mm SLR lens. Shutter lag is 0.009 seconds. It's got a 12x optical zoom, which is the equivalent of a 35-420mm zoom lens, and it has an ISO mode up to 3200 for low light photography. I've never used it, but I've been looking into it recently, and while it's technically not a "DSLR" it's about as close as you can get-- plus, the price is reasonable.

Nikon for professionals. Canon gives too much red. But for consumers, sony.

If it gives too much red, then change the color temp.
mr. pink
Dec. 31, 2006. 08:07 PM
I've never heard of Canons adding too much red. That would have to do with white balance, color temperature, and exposure, which are all things that can be manipulated with Photoshop in RAW format.
A good friend of mine, and an amazing photographer, has used several Canons. Right now he uses the Canon EOS 5D (12.8mp... it's insane), but he's also used the 10D, 20D and 30D. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Canon line of DSLRs... they're just very expensive because they're fully professional.
The Nikon DSLRs like the D80 and D200 are close competition though.

I used to do tech support for Sony, and the DSC-H5 is an excellent camera for the price. It has excellent zoom capabilities, plus with 7 megapixels you could make a giant poster of yourself to put in your room and it would be in excellent quality. You don't have to spend 800 bucks to get a great camera, buy the DSC-H5 and spend the rest on accessories, you'll need em.

A good key thing to ask yourself is what are you going to be using it for? If you want it for artistic shots and photography you would get a totally differnt camera than one that is for snap shots of friends and memories.

This is true, but I think that since he said that size is not an issue and that his max is $800 that he's looking for a pretty serious digital camera. $800 puts it in the range of advanced digital to DSLR... or pro-sumer.
