Full Version: UK study, starting school too early

ok so I read this article about a UK study done on children and their success in primary school and later on in education based on the age that they entered kindergarten. The article states that kids who start at the age of four can't handle the stress and pressures of the various curricula offered as opposed to kids who start at the age of seven and easily overcome the kids who start at the age of four. The article also mentions that there should be more lenient entry dates for school.

now, my question is to you. What age did you start school and have you been successful in school?
Or do you have any other information or perspectives on the issue

i'm only wondering because i started at the age of four, but i've always excelled when it came to school and athletics and that sort of stuff.

I strarted school at normal age, then I skipped two years. In Canada. Then I got back to my country (Costa Rica) and the government made me go a year behind. So.. being a year ahead is stressful in a way, especially when it comes to relationships with classmates that are (even if it's a year of difference) more mature than you are and have a different way of thinking. Otherwise, it's all good.

I never went to preschool, so I started Kindergarten at age six. I'm an honor's student, take college courses and excel at athletics. I didn't grow up to become some sort of a delinquent as those "Go to Preschool kids!" commercials suggest.

I went to preschool. I started at age four. I'm pretty good at school. I used to excel but recently I've been getting As - Cs.

I started Kindergarten at age 5, and excel at nearly every subject. Same with the majority of my friends.

Ditto. I've always excelled at school, except in one subject: history. Not because it gave me trouble, just because I didn't see the point in stupidly remembering dates just to stick them on a piece of paper for the examiner to drool over.
I started school aged 4 as well, and... oh well. See for yourself. I'm coping perfectly with probably the hardest degree course at Bristol.

I started preschool when I was two. I've been EXTREMELY successful.

I entered the proper educational system of Ireland at age 5, but I have since skipped grades 3 and 9 (the latter because I was clever, the former because of confusions while moving countries). I don't excel in school wrestling/sports because I am 2-3 years younger, but get A's in studies.

Went to preschool when I was 3, started school at 4 and now I'm in a grammar school and I do really well in most academic subjects. It hasn't slowed me down at all.

I started school when I was 6, but I'm quite slow.

LOL at my old private school,
the youngest kids were 2 years old. and younger.
They all learn the alphabet and the colors/shapes, before they enter TK.
Most people don't know what TK is, so it's Transitional Kindergarten. It's after Pre-K.
The kids at that school were all indian and Asian.
They were smart.

14, and becoming a sophmore.
that means you were like only thirteen years old in your freshman year.
i was thirteen in 7th grade.

that's interesting. i started school when i was 4.. just about 5 and i do tend to get stressed easily when i'm overloaded by a lot of small tasks and projects.

kind of cool to read.

The same age as every other kid in the UK. 4, I do believe.

I got kicked out of school, but i kinda made them do it to me so I didn't have to walk out myself.

But up until year 7, I was the nerdiest kid ever. [Year 7 being the nineth year I was in education for the ones who aren't from the UK]

So yeah, I'm glad I started school early, I was a right little geek. But I just turned into a lazy, ignorant little cunt so it's not "starting too early" that turned me into an idiot.

I started out really well. Brightest in my class five years running.

Now I'm shockingly average.
Haven't really changed my approach.
I dunno.
