Soccer has way more leagues, bigger ones, and international ones. In total, soccer is watched more, but since it is a group of events instead of one, it doesnt get counted as a single installment.

Soccer is a much, much longer game than football.

Football has multiple leagues as well, and yes, they are smaller because they want to showcase talent only. Not shit leagues like MLS. And soccer is only watched more because it has been around a lot longer.

Football is growing faster in other countries than Soccer in the U.S., even with Beckham coming over here.

And the World Cup is the unofficial designated "big" installment for soccer just like the Super Bowl of the NFL is the unofficial designated "big" installment for football and it gets more viewers than the World Cup.
