A man has been jailed for life for hacking his wife to death with a meat cleaver because he felt humiliated by messages she wrote on the social networking site Facebook.

Wayne Forrester, 34, attacked his wife Emma after she wrote on the site that she wanted to meet other men.

She also changed her online profile to "single" four days after he had moved out.

The truck driver thought his wife was having an affair and had made threats to kill her, the Old Bailey heard, according to the Press Association.

In a statement to police, Forrester said: "Emma and I had just split up. She forced me out. She then posted messages on an Internet website telling everyone she had left me and was looking to meet other men.

"I loved Emma and felt totally devastated and humiliated about what she had done to me."

Forrester, from New Addington, Croydon, pleaded guilty to the murder of his wife, a 34-year-old payroll administrator.

Jailing him for a minimum of 14 years, judge Brian Barker said: "You committed a terrible act. There is no possible excuse or justification. This is a tragic killing and what you have done has caused untold anguish."

The court heard how Forrester drove to the marital home in February and attacked his wife as she lay in bed.

Neighbours heard screaming and rang the police.

Officers found him sitting outside covered in blood and he confessed to the murder.
