seriously, can they?
why or why not?
please note:
this post is a debate concerning the fact that athiests and christians generally don't get along, and the striving for a logical agreement on both sides is very welcome (if at all possible.)
i don't want this post to turn into a debate about creation and evolution. there are plenty of other posts for that, so please leave it out of this one.

And there's already an Atheism thread, so I'm guessing this'll get locked.

it's not so much the concept of either Christianity or the concept of Atheism, but the agreement between members of both groups.

Of course it 'could' happen.
but what would it take?
I'm a Christian, and I think that the issue would be a little bit easier to solve if Christians stopped acting like they are better people than non-Christians, true?

Christians and atheists can never get along because they believe the exact opposite of each other. They have no common ground to start off a debate and therefore can never agree on anything religiously. Agnostics, however, can debate with both because they think there is no way to prove god does or does not exist, and therefore can agree to the possibility of each belief.

one of the problems is that both sides expect the other to be menacing and/or troublesome
since both sides expect an arguement, that's naturally what occurs
really, it is just a question of how much tolerence should both sides have.
I don't think it's right that both sides should put up with everything the other throws at them, but there should be a certain level of tolerence with respect for the other side.

Back when I had a stronger faith, I had a few atheist friends. As long as you accept the fact you have a difference in beliefs, it's not that hard to get along. We just don't talk about religion. The problems arise when one person tries to pressure their beliefs onto the other person.
An atheist may accept the moral values of a Christian, but obviously not the religious values.

i'm not sure
i guess it could be taken a number of ways depending on what the issue was.
I know that i sometimes tell people i'll be praying for them if they're sick or just having a rough time with life and whatnot.
i know that when i say "i'll be praying for you" it means that i care about you enough to do something that i believe to be a helpful for you.
in a case like that, i guess you could take it as a reminder that they are thinking of you and sincerely caring about you.
if the issue was something different, like just for them to basically tell you "hey, i'm a Christian, and i'm going to make it as obvious as possible by awkwardly bringing it up" then i think you should politely tell them that they are welcome to pray for you, but to not bring it up because it just makes you feel awkward.
i hope i'm not entirely off on this whole thing.

basically we were having a discussion about religion and I was the only non-christian there, so they said they would pray for me; basically to ask god to bring me to the right religion or something. made me kinda angry.

It's not just aetheism vs. christianity, most religions battle it out. But it depends on how much tolerance their followers have, and how much the religion teaches the followers to have. The biggest nuisance of most religions is Christianity, because they are one of the biggest religions and have a huge amount of Christians trying to convert others and thinking they are better than everyone else.
Personally, here's my opinion of Christianty (I'm not an aetheist, or a Christian): I think that the churches are corrupt and that the followers who try to convert you or hate non-christians are jerks. I do think that each person you meet though, Christian or not, deserves to be judged by their actions, not their religion. Maybe thoughts, emotions, and values too, but never religion.

If a person is arrogant and not open to others beliefs, then he or she would not be able to get along with the person that has the opposite belief. If someone started beaking you and what you think and feel is right, you're obviously not going to be friends with that person. But if both the theist and atheist are accepting of both beliefs, then they can get along, as long as they don't talk about religion =p

Christians should realize by their logic that the Atheists are just going to hell, and the Atheists should realize that by their logic neither of them are accomplishing anything. Fighting is totally pointless, unless one were trying to convert a spectator or other end of the debate. Who knows, people are stubborn so it'd probably be useless anyways.

Atheists just don't believe in a God, what does that have to do with the logic of thinking that they wouldn't accomplish anything? The disbelief of deities and the belief that neither party would accomplish anything are two different beliefs, and only the first one can be linked to aetheism.

Wow, because I think I'm right?
-
http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Aetheism is a redirection to atheism.
- Etymologically, the prefix ae- does not exist in greek. a- does, though.
- Even if the prefix ae- did exist...why would we not say aegnosticism, then?
Who is stubborn? The person who corrected you a few times on the same mistake already, at first nicely, then by just stating the mistake? Or the person who intently made the mistake again to then say I am a stubborn prick?
P.S: I don't care about being right. I just care about proper spelling/grammar, and vocabulary is part of spelling. Greek compounds are not an exception.

Sure they can get along, I have many friends who are extremely religious and I have many friends who are atheists. They all get along, because of the simple fact that religion is never brought up in conversation. I'm agnostic, so I'm sorta the middleground in all this(That was kinda off topic). I'm pretty much the one who stops the topic of religion from ever arising between my friends.

Exactly. One does - or at least should not - stop the other. And since extremes will not listen to other extremes (look at politics to see this. A politically "median" person will have some ways to convince right- and left-winged people. However, right-winged people will not listen to left- and vice versa), there is a need for a mediator, if only to prevent the topic of religion from arising in an all-out war.

And they CANNOT discuss religion around each other because one of them will get mad. I, on the other hand, do not have any beliefs, so it makes it easy for me.

Well I assumed we're talking about run of the mill nothing happens when you die, so if nothing happens when you die life value is set to null when we kick the bucket. At the end of the day if nothing happens, then nothing truly matters in the long run. I myself am an Agnostic, and I believe if there is a God/Godess or a multiple of such then they'd understand I'd want to spend my life enjoying their creation, and if not then whatever.
