Okay. I'm a girl, and I love video games. I am basically obsessed, I'll admit it. I've accomplished a few things I'm proud of, that puts some "hardcores" to shame. I'm no legend, but I'm decent.

Now, imagine one day, I am kicking serious butt on my Gamecube. Who's butt am I kicking? An older boy's. He tells me that being a female gamer is bold. Bold? My two best friends game, too. Apparently, we were a rarity to him.

Then, in Game Informer magazine, issue 170, there's a letter entitled "Ignorance Overwhelming." Basically, this guy expresses that girls can't handle more than, "three face buttons." One reason may be that, according to him, a portion of the woman's brain is smaller than men's. This may be true. I honestly don't know. Also, he says women should have their own difficulty setting. "Girlie." Good Lord.

As if all this wasn't enough, I was doodling Kingdom Hearts II stuff in my spiral, when another boy sees. "You like Kingdom Hearts II?" There is poorly contained surprise. I say yes, and we discuss the game. He never beat it. I beat it on all difficulties. He never beat Sephiroth. (Sephiroth makes the final boss look like a cupcake.) I beat Sephiroth. Twice. In Proud (Hard) mode. My journal is over 90% complete, his isn't. All this and he look's awed. He compliments me, and I thank him. But he seemed more awed that I did all of this, even though I'm a girl. Why? I don't know.

Those are my personal experiences, I opened this thread so anyone can share theirs, or even debate. I just want to know what others think.
Boys welcome of course. It's not like I hate guys. (On the contrary... :] ) I'm just upset that some people think I can't game just 'cause I'm a girl. It makes me feel sort of sad.

Well.......in my life i've only known and seen about 8 girls that actually like videogames.

hah, im just kidding. im not entirley shocked that girls play video games. i have some girlfriends (friends that are girls) that played video games all the time. but they play (from what i know) DDR, Pokemon, and kingdom hearts.

im not being biased or anything but, the majority of girls i know or meet play DDR, kingdom hearts, so i classify those games under "girl games".

Dont get me wrong, i played DDR and KH hundreds of times and they are both amazing games. its just i know more girls that play them than guys. hell, i believe girls are better at games than guys!

example, 2 nights ago i was playing Halo2 in a custom game. somone by the gamertag "DR. SUeSs. joined and i was suprised it was a girl, i was even more suprised when she took the lead from me half way throuhg the game and then topped me by 29 kills.

Ive had actual girlfriends and girls that are just friends, kick my butt at games, if its on the comp like WoW
or on the console and we're playing Super Smash Bros Melee.
Theirs nothing wrong with girls playing games, I find it awesome.
So Girls will understand what guys are like and they'll feel more part of the guys

the only reason that i dont want more girls to play video games to play video games is because when i die/lose i usually say stuff like

I play Counter-Strike and Diablo (i gave these examples cuz they're on ur list) and i actually rly like them.

Kingdom Hearts is so damn easy. Beating Sephiroth isn't a big deal, he's pretty simple. Slightly harder in Kingdom Hearts I, but still easy as fuck.

Pretty much every time I run into a chick on Counter-Strike, they are amazing.

Wow. You must be good. Please, no cursing though. And Sephiroth was easier in KH2. Still, it is one of the hardest things to do in the game. Some people use Sephiroth as a status symbol. if you can beat him, you're the master.

That isn't saying much, since they are games made for children. He is the hardest thing to beat in a very easy game. I'm shit at games and I beat the guy about 20 times in KHI, got myself to lvl 100. So, if I can do it anyone can.

I found that there are less boys playing games than girls.Like when yu-gi-oh was hot, I saw one girl ever have a deck.Still to this day, that was the only girl I saw with yu-gi-oh cards.

The majority of the market is geared towards men, and mostly men are gamers, though there is an increasing number in females, though I no longer play video games, pretty much clean and sober from it, I was a wreck when that was all I did.

Besides playing DDR and Guitar Hero, we're pretty good or masters at other games. Grand Theft Auto, Super Mario, Grand Turismo, Resident Evil, Super Smash Bros., Mortal Kombat, too much to list.

You suck then. Once you hit level 80, Sephiroth is easy. Since you beat him "20" times, it means you beat him when it was no longer a challenge.

I managed to beat him at level 49. It was hard as fuck. Try that bitch. The first time I beat him I was level 71. Thus still slightly hard, but not that amazing (At the time, I did not know aero was a good spell, so I never used it.). So please, know about what you are talking about before you say something.


Anyway, I know one girl who plays video games. And like me, all she plays are Zelda games, and Super Smash Bros. She keeps up with gaming news though, more so than I do.

haha I have gears, halo, counter-strike source, and i've played WoW and god of war...

But anyways theres are a lot more girl gamers than you think. About 2 years ago when i used to play halo religiously i was in a clan called PMS for ..they have a website and forums and stuff too but there were over 100 girls in that clan and i'm not really in it anymore but i know they still have a lot of girl gamers playing halo, gears, and other pc games. Anyways they were definitely not the only all girl clan and i have a lot of friends that are girls that i play 360 games with.

I tell you what I've never heard a girl like, and that's Metal Gear Solid. Never.

But there's tons that love nintendo franchises, Halo, anything for DS and crash bandicoot stuff like that.

Ohhh, Halo 2 is the best for parties and groups! Me and my girls always have a blast. The Versus mode is very strategic, that's what gives it its charm.

I've beaten him at a high lvl 60 or low lvl 70 aswell. Also I never tried to say I was good, in fact I believe I said I sucked at video games. Trying to beat him at a lower level is quite stupid, since you have to avoid battles to remain at a low level then battle him while not getting hit. And not matter what you do, you are gonna get hit. That's not even a test of "Viedo gaem skillz", because you can't dodge every hit not matter how good you are. If you say you can do it without him landing a hit on you, then I do believe you are talking out of your ass.

EDIT:Nevar used Aero, think it's a barrier, maybe you used that.

Anyway, I play video games on rare occasions. I know lots of girls who do nothing all day BUT play video games. Not too rare around here.
My friend (female) kicks ASS at guitar hero. I have yet to beat any of her scores. :'(

Sorry if any of this has been mentioned before, I'm just going to do a long rant about what I think the problem is.

First off, I don't think the problem is that girls just don't game. I think it's more that the, "hardcore" (Bleh, I hate that term) male gamers, just don't give girls, new to gaming, a chance.

Say a guy who's really into a RTS game, like C&C 3 for example, tries to get his sister to play against him. He's going to kick her ass, undoubtedly. And based on that experience she very well might be turned off to video games forever. It could be like that with anyone though, regardless of the gender.

For another example; A guy meets a girl, say she was kinda preppy and stuff in highschool, never really showed interest in video games, but was always curious. The guy is big into FPS games, and instantly brightens up when he finds out his new girlfriend wants to start playing with him.

The first thing he'll probably do is get her set up, and throw her right into a match of CS with him. It's his favorite game, and he wants to play with her. Based on the nature of the game, CS is a very difficult game to get into, and not exactly something you should do, and may very well result in the same way the first example did.

I think that yes, female gamers are rare, at least, female gamers that get as into video games as some guys do. I think the main reason is, most of them just aren't made with the intention of appealing to females, and that the majority of women aren't going to invest their time into some gory FPS, or complicated RTS game. Especially when it's something foreign to them, that they've never tried before.

Like you said yourself, lauren, you've beaten kingdom hearts 2 on all difficulties. Obviously a feat, no doubt, but you say that to someone like me (And I'm not trying to brag here) who's logged over 700 hours into counter strike, and it doesn't really seem to hold a torch to it.

But thats just the nature of my interest in video games. To me, if you gloat about something you gloat about something you did in the multiplayer of a game, because that shows your real skill with a game. I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I've referenced beating Halo on legendary as an example of how good I am at games. But thats just me.

I think if you see a girl into video games you're most likely to see them playing RPG's and stuff. Games like WoW and Final fantasy. Story-driven games that have a slower-pace, and require more tactics and thinking then running around a map on UT2k4, shooting people with a flak cannon.

So I guess to conclude I'll just say, I think by default, girls aren't so much into gaming until the get turned onto it by someone. And that someone shouldn't go, "Oh hey, you want to play games? Lets play Gears of War", then totally kick their ass.

All my friends have either matched it, or beaten it (although not by much. It was just some random contest we did.) including the girl one.



Do not know, I do not play single player. Ever. That is how you start sucking. The way to test how good you are is to go to a tournament, or go to a random gathering where real smashers get together, and see how you do. I did that once, and out of my friends, I was the best, and I still managed to basically be only as good as the worst regular there.



Hence everybody says I am really really good at RPG's. I never train. Ever. You will be lucky if I do not just run away from all the encounters. Yet I manage to "beat" games anyway. It is not that hard.

I could not, but I am sure somebody else could. It would take a lot of practice. All I did was just have a bunch of magic and elixers, and cast Aero all the time. That spell was ridiculous, it made the game so easy.

The videogame industry has been traditionally dominated by men and produced games more appealing to them, rather than female players.
Marketing managers in the industry, seem to aim their message at the male audience most of the time.
For example, what's the reason for.. Let's say boothbabes on game-exhibitions such as E3? In other words appealing to men (unless some female gamer on E3 would happen to like the same gender). And that's just basic marketing.

Some people just have genres they don't like. For example, i hate rts's.

Maybe if you suck. First off, Aero is amazing. It should keep you alive, albeit, about to die. And if you specialized in magic at the beginning of the game, you get Second Chance really early.
