The vast majority of the country is religious. It's about 10% or so that are agnostic or atheist, right?

You have no idea what you're talking about. Ever had a history class?
About 230 years ago, when the constitution was being written, a lot of important people, like Benjamin Franklin thought religion was plain stupid.
More recently, Thomas Edison was an atheist.
Religion has been growing in the US for the last 50 years or so. Mostly because of the Republicans and their so-called ''Alliance'' with the church. Which is kind of funny since you'd think that the church would be a little more lefty and promote things like Socialism and such (you know people helping each other).

I think that religion and the church go hand in hand. And people don't need religion to be ''good''. More sex, more greed, more money.. indeed, unfortunately that is the world we live in today.
I think that the governments have been controlling us for decades and religion helped them doing this. So my answer would be no.
If you want to know what happens behind the curtains, you, or others, would then ''enjoy'' reading this book:

I'd say that this is just another stupid conspiracy theory, but it could spark more interesting debates, like whether or not religion should have a role in government or whether or not religion itself has become corrupt, causing more "sex greed and money". why'd you put money in there anyway? is it considered evil now?

I would say that money which is earned in a ''filthy'' way could be considered evil. Like how people get rich from selling products that actually can cause cancer, diseases etc.

Any specific evidence you want to share? This alone is just as bad as how Whitestripes keeps attacking the person, not the idea. We want a debate, not an arguement.
Also, anybody want to mention how they are doing so or what their motivation would be? Or even just why it would be bad, plainly? Not everyone agrees that solely mainstream religions (which is what I feel this thread is aimed towards) are necessarily good and necessary.

yeah, I'm one of those people who doesn't like the idea of mainstream religion. it tends to corrupt people and create more stupidity in already stupid people. it closes minds, creates hate, and makes people angry.

If what you say is happening, it is not the Government that is moving away from religion, it is the people. The people are who decides what the Government is, and they are what influences it. And also, "religion" is not one basic thing. I am Christian but I do not have many of the same views that conservative Christians have, so really it may just be that the government is becoming less right wing. Also, the part you said about sex and money etc is more a result of things depicted by media , so it is not neccesarily true.

The government wants to BE the religion. Look at political movements, such as Marxist/Leninism. They actually have inflexible dogmas, same as many religions. All that amounts to is a bunch of mentally ill power trippers, backed up with their "bible," in order to satisfy their twisted egos. If you really HAVE to be religious, try post- medieval Christianity. At least that religion has the concept of forgiveness, as opposed to islam. For cryin out loud, no belief system based on some whacked out social scientists will ever measure up to any sane and moral standards. Think I'm wrong? Look at the nazis, the commies, the islamic republic, etc, they all share the same evil, can't brook any dissent weakness.

Oh and BTW that thing you quoted was from Pookie. She's a space cadet. Go to politics and religion, and follow my battle with her in the subject about Israel and Palestine. She knows everything. Muwahaha. She emotes, and I think. She's all bunny rabbits and hamsters. So nice.
