P.S. Just a crazy, unlikely suggestion (not saying how it is) but maybe they wanted "Smash" as their name, but they might have wrote it down instead of typing it and accidently wrote an "o" where an "a" should be. And eventually, the word "Smosh" stuck.

i read loonnnggg back (around the time the pokemon theme tune vid come out)
that they were talking and either one of them was ment to say 'mosh' as in mosh pit and it came out wrong and they ended up saying 'smosh'
