MATHS- circles

Find the equation of the circle that passes through the points (4,5), (4,-3) and (0,5)

i stuck a couple of the points into the equation of a circle and then did a simultaneous equation to get the x value of the centre point as 2. I can't work out how to find the y-coordinate or the radius of the circle though.

and i'm supposed to find the x &y that will make both of those formula's valid. ( so the x and y have to be the same)

I can get the answer filling in random things till i find them, but they want us to do it differently. Apparently its quite an easy sum but I DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

y=3x-7 / -1
y= -2.5x+4

-y=-3x+7
y=-2.5x+4
-5.5x=11 /: (-5.5)

x= -2

y=-2.5x(-2)+4
y=5+4
y=9

the answer:

(-2,9)

x=-2
y=9

y=3x-7
y= -2,5x+4 from these two => 3x-7=-2,5x+4 => 5,5x=11 => x=2

With the X you go in the first one and get: y=6-7=-1

^^^^ aha ... your's is pretty easy too. you just have to make all the calculations and the do what you did with the other ecuation so the y or x dissappears by summing up the two. then just find out x and replace it in one of the above ecuation to find out y

We do get hw in australia... At my school it was kind of optional, if you wanted to pass, you do the homework, unless you're smart... we had massive amounts of maths homework... I didn't do much but I still got an SA6 which was better than half the people in my class so I was happy...

We looked at Enthalpy in Intermediate Physics, you do intermediates when you're about 15. We only really learnt how to calculate enthalpy change though.

And as no-one managed to work out my maths problem for me I had to go it alone. It was actually really easy. As soon as I sketched the points I could work out enough about the circle to form the equation. Just goes to show, as my maths teacher likes to say, if in doubt sketch it out!

Well, she's right, even in advanced math subjects sketching makes everything more clear.

Yeah, I'm learning that the hard way. I hate showing working as I solve the majority of my maths problems in my head using common sense rather than set down working. Trying to write down clearly how I've worked stuff out is really annoying, though it does seem to gain me a whole load more marks in tests. Damn teachers and their mark schemes!
