Media is an important social phenomenon that looms over the world as it influences billions of individuals globally. Consumers are bombarded with daily doses of multiple forms of media, which has eventually affected individualism and society as a whole. Nonetheless, this is the media’s intended approach. In order to manipulate society, they know that the mind of a consumer can be changed, and their opinions can be molded. Various forms of media exist in order to successfully deliver a message that will leave an imprint in the consumer’s mind. One of the most influential forms of media is music, which holds the power to alter a person’s identity. Movies – another form of media – are partially held accountable for the increase in violence and aggression that are displayed among all ages. However, advertisements and logos seem to have the most evident effect as they cause an individual to change their attitude towards themselves, friends, and affect the way they think. Media uses a variety of appealing approaches to enforce a strong influence on society, thus affecting the world’s consumption, economic activities, life-styles, and values.

One of the most influential forms of media is music, which holds the power to alter a person’s identity. Music has the ability to create a significant impact on a person’s life – varying from the phase of “finding one’s self,” to helping one get through a rough encounter. It is believed that a person becomes what they listen to, most commonly referring to certain moods that are associated with different types of music. Not only does music have the power to change a person’s mood, but it can also influence their style. It is possible to distinctly notice the similarities in people with the same music taste. For example, some of the hardcore, rock, and metal genre represented by blunt and depressing lyrics, are generally found among the “gothic,” “emo,” or “punk” communities, who usually tend to a darker and rebellious self-appearance. In addition to being a physical influence, music also holds the power to calm and revitalize, thus contradicting its’ other ability to accumulate enough energy and spirit to tempt a person to dance. As a result of its versatility in many aspects, music has been called “The International Language.” Even when people cannot speak the language of a country, they can still share the appreciation for the music, as humans are capable of recognizing and understanding the beauty of it. Once a person has been exposed to music, it will forever become a part of their soul.

Movies – another form of media – are partially held accountable for the increase in violence and aggression that are displayed among all ages. Violence has always played a role in entertainment, but in recent years, there has been a growing consensus that an aspect of media violence has changed. First of all, studies have found that between 1993 and 2001, incidents of physical violence had increased by 378 per cent. Secondly, researchers also identified a disturbing increase in psychological violence, especially from 1999 to 2001, where incidents increased by 325 per cent. Along with increasing in quantity, media violence has also become much more graphic, sexual, and sadistic. Explicit pictures of slow motion bullets exploding from people’s chests, and dead bodies surrounded by pools of blood, are desensitizing people to violence. The use of violence as a mean to solve problems is glorified by entertainment in which both villains and heroes resort to violence on a continual basis, thus causing children to inappropriately think that violence is necessary to cope with difficult situations. When researchers observed children during their play after watching a violent cartoon, they noticed that these children were much more likely to hit other children, break toys, and express similar aggressive behaviors as to what they had watched. This exposure to media violence has also confirmed that children are more likely to tolerate aggressive behavior in the real world and have less sympathy for its victims, as well as being the ones to inflict the violence. Overall, violence is simply being presented as justifiable, natural, and inevitable – influencing society for the worst.

However, advertisements and logos seem to have the most evident effect as they cause an individual to change their attitude towards themselves, friends, and affect the way they think. A survey was conducted by researchers and 78% of the people surveyed felt that the media had influenced their life, but the truth has rested that everyone is influenced by media in some way. Advertisements and logos are everywhere – clothing, TV commercials, the Internet, shop windows, and more. These companies know that attitudes towards a brand are not set in a consumer’s mind after one commercial or purchase, and therefore, shaping attitudes often takes a considerable amount of time. Society is constantly bombarded with ads, billboards, and magazines that display individuals who look “perfect”, thus affecting a person’s positive thoughts on their own image. No matter how diverse a society is, the surrounding reality is often blocked out by the false reality portrayed in the media. It is human nature to succumb to the pressures that their lives would be that much better if they use the latest beauty product or go on a great new diet. Nonetheless, these attacks by the media aim to lower the consumer’s self-esteem in order to influence them to buy their products. Humans only have so much mental defense before the media wins the game of the mind, for people remember commercials and buy their products; they see random catalogs and buy their books and toys; they watch movie ads and find themselves at the movie theater a week later; all the while, thinking about that advertisement that they had seen. Media in the form of advertisement is strong – and often too strong for anyone to completely ignore.
