I'm going to bring this back to life and ask:

Has anybody read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime?

Solving Systems of Equations using Substitution

Easy. What's the equation?
[H][A][R][O]
ok it is,

3x+5y+-8
4x-y=-3

i'm not totally clueless but it's manipulating the second equation that gets me.
toymachine531
(3x)+(5(4x+3))=8
Solve, babe.
3x+20x+15=8
23x+15=8
23x=-7
x=-(7/23)
ericballard
the second equation will be changed to 4x + 3 = y
[H][A][R][O]
oh sorry it's not +8
it's =8
so...
3x+5y=8

QUOTE(toymachine531 @ Aug. 14, 2008. 10:11 PM)

(3x)+(5(4x+3))=8
Solve, babe.
3x+20x+15=8
23x+15=8
23x=-7
x=-(7/23)
so y=5?
AMIRITE?
ifyouseekay
i don't think y can equal five.

but by quick glance, it looks like it's possible that they both can be negative one.
[H][A][R][O]
waitwaitwait i'm wrong i did something.
i forgot to add the x to the 5(4x)

k i got it now.
thanks, babe wub.gif

I won't solve those for you, but:

3. Use kinematic equations. You'll need to manipulate them, as you have several unkowns (t, h, vxi, vyi). I'm assuming you don't need to take wind drag into account as you would need to iterate to find a solution.

5. Use conservation of energy. The kinetic energy when the mass is release from the spring is equal to the potential energy the mass obtains at the apex of its trajectory ((1/2)mv^2 = mgh). You can find the initial velocity, and use kinematic equations (problem 3) to solve for the horizontal distance.

7. Free-body diagram. Sum the forces in the radial direction. T = m(v^2)/r. Solve for v.
