Have you heard their new album? It's quite a departure from their usual sound. Unfortunately, I wouldn't call it a step up.

Yes I've heard it. It isn't the greatest, but it certainly doesn't fail.

In terms of popular music as a whole, it's a good album. In terms of what Coldplay is capable of, and in terms of my personal musical standards, it's definitely a disappointment.

And it's even worse after I revisited the classics like Yellow, Trouble, The Scientist, and Clocks.

I'm sorry you feel that way. The older ones are better, yes, but everyone switches their sound up once in a while.

I don't think Coldplay needed to change. They did their little piano rock, they had their little niche carved out in the market, and then they made Viva la Vida. I respect them for changing things up a little bit, and certainly some bands are better for it (Radiohead, for example), but I don't think it paid off.
