ADVERTISING ( I searched before posting)on the Internet, in Publications, Product Placement in Films, and most commonly on the television.
Is it really
necessary? Do you feel that that advertising is a main source of revenue for large companies and creates healthy competition?
Or is it just a
manipulative way of getting the public to buy a certain product or feel a certain way?
Or do some adverts like
Dove ( Campaign For Real Beauty)and
Kleenex Tissues ( Let It All Out) help people feel better about themselves?
I'm doing a project on this at the moment for Business and I was curious your views. My views about this aren't stated above.

For websites, adverts are absolutely vital. They help webmasters in keeping their sites free whilst still being able to pay the web hosting (which, it has to be said, costs $$$ for a big site - dedicated servers go for 80€/month, LOWEST PRICE)
It also plays in the favour of everyone, too. Some people might not even look at the ads, but there sometimes are good informations on targetted ads. It works in the same way as rumours, except that they are planned ones.
It's the same for the medias, without the second point. Whatever goes on TV ads, it's not going to be good. Still, people buy it...

Advertising is needed, for a product in a big market. Otherwise how else will they reach out to the population?

Advertising appeals to the consumer to make them partial to their product over another company's similar product. It promotes competition which is a part of modern business and is motivation for a company to improve their product to make it stand out.

Is it really necessary? yes. it gets to everyone in an easy way.
Do you feel that that advertising is a main source of revenue for large companies and creates healthy competition? yeah, obviously. what do you want them to just brawl in the street over someone buying each other's product?
Or is it just a manipulative way of getting the public to buy a certain product or feel a certain way? manipulation can be both good and bad. it can make people see things the way you want or your view on something. it might be the only way at this point. Although, yeah, if its manipulating you into another robot in the population its not such a good thing.
Or do some adverts like Dove ( Campaign For Real Beauty)and Kleenex Tissues ( Let It All Out) help people feel better about themselves? yeah, but isn't that the point of the advetising? to make people want to buy your product and make them feel good about themselves? by using "normal" people and emotions it just shows that not ALL advertising is about extreme models having sex with each other to sell the product.

consummism? What is that, like a mixture of consumerism and communism?
On a more on-topic note:
Yeah, advertising is necessary in a luxury-based economy such as that of the united states or western europe. In places where people are only buying things they need, no, it's not important and it would be kind of ridiculous, because people are going to buy the things they need no matter whether you advertise them or not. The only reason to advertise in a needs-based ecomony would be to advocate buying your needed product over a competing company that produces the same needed product as you.

it's necessary in a capitalistic economy for firms and businesses to be competitive to make the most profit.

If they don't advertise, how are you supposed to find out about them?
But sometimes when let's say they play a commercial like 5 times in one break, It gets annoying.

Well, I want to feel smart so I'll post in here.
Yes I feel advertisements are necessary. Not every company has enough money to afford cable television marketing, and some people can't even afford cable in general. So ads in newpapers billboards are the next big thing. Plus, bums need to know whats good too.
There are however, NO billboards in Hawaii, and I'm glad of that. Billboards are fucking PANSY.
Now off to the politics forum!

Ads let us know that a product exists. But if they overplay a product ad, than I hate ads!

I think it is Nesscessary yet sometimes it can get out of hand. Like in America where drug companies actually advertise different drugs they produce, thats completely wrong.

they're companies, like you said, so why would they be restricted to be competitive with other drug companies?
