TOKYO - A Japanese hospital opened the country's only anonymous drop box for unwanted infants Thursday despite government admonitions against abandoning babies.

The baby drop-off, called "Crane's Cradle," was opened by the Catholic-run Jikei Hospital in the southern city of Kumamoto as a way to discourage abortions and the abandonment of infants in unsafe public places. The hospital described it as a parent's last resort.

A small hatch on the side of the hospital allows people to drop off babies in an incubator 24 hours a day, while an alarm will notify hospital staff of the new arrival. The infants will initially be cared for by the hospital and then put up for adoption.

"We started the service but hope it won't be used," head nurse Yukiko Tajiri said. "I hope it is seen as a symbol that we are always here for parents to share their difficulty."

But government officials warned the service might only encourage more abandonments.

"In principle, parents should not abandon their babies anonymously," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters Thursday. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki meanwhile said it was "fundamental for parents to raise their children with their own hands."

Similar baby drops exist in Germany and South Africa. Some U.S. states, such as Alabama and Minnesota, also have programs protecting identities of women who give up their babies.

The drop box was set up after a series of high-profile cases in which newborn babies were abandoned in parks and supermarkets, triggering a public outcry.

Abortion is readily available and widespread in Japan where restriction against the measure is loose and there are no clear religious taboos.

Nearly 290,000 abortions were reported in 2005, according to the Health Ministry.

For some reason I find this hilarious. But then, I'm not in a serious right now. I'll probably be horrified when I become sane again.

There's a couple in Italy also, I guess its a little racy, and perhaps does make new mothers take the step to abandoning a baby that they may not have taken if such a service wasnt available, but its better this than having newborn babies dumped in a shopping centre bathroom.......

There's both pros and cons to it really, it'll be interesting too see how it works out
spaedin
Oh god, when I saw this I thought you meant the babies would just die. Ugh.

I actually this that it is a good idea, if it help to prevent leaving unwanted babies in dangerous places until someone finds them, so it's a good thing to leave them in the hospital, cuz that way they can ensure that they would take care of them
Christina=Baller!
i thought you meant it was like a good will box. just dump the baby in there. tongue.gif then that would be sad...lol
but yeah this is a good idea smile.gif

Agreed.

California has a similar law. You can drop your baby off at any fire station or hospital no questions asked. I think it's good, it prevents mothers of going to the extremes of raising a baby in bad conditions or even killing them. The babies have a better chance at life this way, in most cases they get adopted by people who want them and are able to raise a child.

Is that the way you went ???

isn't this encouraging them to have babies but if they don't want it its ok because theres a drop box!! but at least they wouldn't kill the babies
But my country is planning the exact same thing.

Most people don't want to get pregnant/go through the pregnancy/give birth with intentions of dropping their baby off when it's all over.
pennylane3434
they have these in italy also.

They may be ignorant and not use contraceptives. there was this girl who got pregnant twice. when she was 9 and when she was 11.
Catholics cant abort if they are pregnant if i am not wrong.
jewjewbee
i sort of can't sort my feelings out on this
im adopted
in bulgaria, my birth mom couldn't keep me because her dad [my grandfather] would've killed me if he found out i existed.
so she managed to hide the fetus version of me until i was born, put me up for adoption.. and i got landed with crap parents in america, but i suppose they're better than nothing, or being a dead fetus baby
but with all this knowledge i keep thinking "why am i not dead?"

so these hospital raised kids.. it seems weird, they'll think "why did i get put here when it was just easier to shove me in a sewer?" or something like that

most people would think that we'd just shut up and not think about it. but cmon, we've got some right to know about who is responsible for giving us life and why they gave us up...
fckbees
at first i seriously thought this was about just dropping off babies in a box and letting them die or something.

the boxes are incubated. theyre nice and warm for the babies. i had a whole conversation in spanish today about this, actually.

That's good, but shouldn't governments focus on birth control so there's less unwanted babies?

ACTUALLY, the government only allows one baby per couple. But the first born son in China is the one who traditionally cares for the parents when they get old, so all these parents are killing/abandoning baby girls.

That's all very well, but the place we're discussing is Japan.

And I've become serious again, and I still find the thought of it hilarious. I do think it's a good idea though.
monkeys-are-kewl
lol Yes alot like blockbuster...
imupsidedownsometimes
So many things besides babies are gonna get dropped in that.
monkeys-are-kewl
Like people pissin' or crapin' in there? Cause thats just dirty.
panatic
I also think this is a good idea. Families in third-world countries are having more babies than in countries like America. And if we are doing it in a rich country, then there is no doubt it's happening in a less fortunate country. But in third-world countries, sanitation is horrible and this insures a larger number of babies survive.

I hope that made sense and didn't sound like I was going off topic.

What a nice place to put your baby.

What is it, like a rubbish chute or something that you drop your babies down? Cos that's the image I get.

And what if somebody drops off like a pile at once? That's one full incubator...
DANGbang!
Its a good idea, but whats wrong with just taking the baby into hospital by yourself, instead of dropping it down a box?

OK! I'll stop poking holes in their condoms.

Come on, it's funny to watch the population go overboard.
Just one more. Please. I need to get my fix.
BriTiSh~
It's a good idea but they would have to be full of cushions so the baby didn't die or get bruised.
