Full Version: the nature of infinity

there are many analogies to promote the nature of infinity, monkeys with an infinite amount of time will eventually create the entire works of Shakespeare, two parallel lines going on for eternity, eventually they will meet(nothing to do with perspective). do you believe it?

is there an infinite universe? in an infinite universe, everything thats a possibility will happen an infinite number of times, e.g. i could kill the president of America using a shoe and some string an infinite number of times, what would you have happen?

heres a question i thought up when i was bored, its fact that there are an infinite amount of numbers, if you minus one, is it still infinity?

and remember, keep an open mind.

It's still infinity... yes.

I think infinity is WAM!!! big biggrin.gif

There's a hotel with an infinite number of rooms, but they get full up. Then one more person turns up. So they make everybody move up one room (person in room 1 to room2 etc) and put the new person in room 1.

This is how my maths teacher tried to explain infinity to some people. I don't really see how it works.. begs the question that if there's an infinite number of rooms how the hell did they get full up?!

Infinity is weird. And I don't want to think about it right now.

Than don't post in this topic, it's as simple as that.

I think this is rather confuzzling.

Anyway, seeing how my username is INFINITY, this beckons for my reaction.

infinity is indescribable, as i do not think we as 'mere' humans can really think of what it is, it's beyond our grasp.

it just goes on and on. and on. and let's not forget: and on.

No. Look up the word parallel.

Yes. Infinity isa term saying that numbers never end. Ever.

To me infinity isn't a number. Look what I said up there. ^

Infinity doesn't have to be big. Something could be infinitely small.

For example, say you can cut something in half, and keep cutting it, and keep cutting it, it'll only get smaller, but you just have to zoom in to keep seeing it. Like, a subatomic particle is the smallest unit for our standard measurement, but it doesn't mean there can't be half of a proton, an eight of a proton, and millionth of a proton, etc..

If space isn't infinite, than what's on the other side
hellothere13
-yes. there is an infinity.
-i believe(and there is proof from the dopplar effect)that the universe is still expanding from the Big Bang.
-i believe that if you give any organism enough time, and the correct factors, it could eventually evolve into a civilized creature, or something beyond.
-i believe that we are still evolving, and could someday be better than now. (that is, if we stop messing with our DNA, and choosing our childrens gender/haircolor. if we stop tinkering with thedelicate system that has made it this far, and naurally, will continue going on.
-it is the nature of nature itself to heal itself, adapt itself, progress itself, and create itself.
-things get smaller and smaller infinetly. though the 'nano' or w.e. is the smallest we know, it keeps going.

---and now im going to shut up, because you probably dont want to listen to my incoheriant(sp?) ramblings.
Leo_Woof
Right. Infinity is not a number. It's a term used to describe how numbers go on forever. You can always add one, no matter how big the number. Therefore infinity cannot be a number, because you cannot add or take away from it.

A different kind of space.

The universe, I think, isn't inifinite. I can't say exactly why not, I'm not a physicist. I just have the feeling that it can't go on for ever, because nothing can. Why should the universe be any different?
sgt_andrew
has it been proven that space is infinite?

if it has then y is time infinite?

i think infinity is endless and can not b a # because it a math term.

and u can not multiply infinty by any other number because it will stay the same like its opposite zero.

NOTE:only a theory so i wouldnt really know wat it is

Time is irrelevant, so that statement is out of the question.
hellothere13
hmmm.....this shit is deep.

-soo, if the universe ends, what is beyond it?
--the universe cant end, because if it did, there would have to be something else containing it.
-if you think, we could be the smallest organisms, living on an atom that we call earth. the other stars and planets are other atoms, aand we could be the make-up of some random fat kid. but to us, time is longer, because we are smaller.
-then, the atoms that compose us could be planets too.

((haha kinda reminds me of MIB)

and yes, the universe IS expanding.
The Dopplar effect shows stars and planet shifts.
using red and blue as coming closer and moving away.
(dont ask me which is which cause hell if i know)
the stars are maving appart, which means there is more space for them to expnd in to.
(and yes i read national geographic)
blackcoffeeseizure
the universe isnt infinite according to physicists, however it is constantly expanding at the speed of light with this in mind we will never reach the end of space, even if we can travel light speed because by the time we get to the end, the end will have expanded to many light years away.
DefaultChild
But thats just the thing. If the Universe is constantly expanding, then that would technically mean that there would have to be some OTHER form of space outside the universe, that our universe is continuing to fill.

It is almost impossible to comprehend that the universe is infinant, as the whole consept of infinity is mind boggling in itself, but it is equally difficult to comprehend that there is something OUTSIDE the universe, a form of otherspace that our universe i occupying and filling up.
Leepay
I love how space is infinite but it's still expanding...

This thread is awesome but probably won't last. Only because human beings know nothing.

Actually yes, it meant that, I used to think like you but a friend explained me the whole thing laugh.gif . Actually, protonsm neutrons and electrons, are not parts of the atom, theyīre just electric charges so you canīt divide them...

Actually that atomic thingy is:

1) Weird
2) Abstract
3) Boring
4) Hard

Well, about infiinity, is a really interesting thing... believe me, since I started thinking about some nights I canīt sleep well...

Stephen King wrote once: "Hell is to be dommed to repeat something over and over again all the way down eternity"... imagine that, repeat something all the way down eternity forever and never stop... I mean, the best thing will be boring to repeat it over and over, even having sex with the most beautiful and desirable woman you want... thatīs creepy...

And about eternity in space, is something logic and probably one of the most underrated prove that there are paranormal things... I mean, eternity, canīt be explained... NEVER. How do you explain that something is too big to never end ? thatīs unbelieavable weird...

Anyway, Iīm happy living in my finite room, in my finite life and with my finite friends... letīs leave this thing to more important people tongue.gif

See you,

MN
gerbiline
You know the way space is infinite and its really hard to imagine something never ending, I have come to the conclusion that is impossible to tell.
If anyone ever tried to reach the end of the universe, they would eventually die and never reach 'the end of the universe', so thats what infinity is to me, it goes past life so we'll never figure it out.
zzx4k
quantum mechanics baby, thats the way to do it....atoms ....

Quarks, strong force, weak force, neutrinos...oh MAN

there is infinite number of waves in a microwave oven...blows your mind.

Then why look on this thread or bother replying? to get your post count up? greedy person...

Anyways heres what i think:
there probably is infinite space, i mean how could there be a giant border from nothing going to nothing?
i really dont think two pararlell lines could ever meet, they would keep going infinity or not.

Back on the space thing, if space IS indeed infinite, then there should be another earth. Look at it this way: lots of spheres with different matter arrangements in space going on for an infinite distance. Eventually, you will come to a sphere with the same matter arrangement as earth! blink.gif im now confusing myself

thats a good point, but if its an infinite universe, you'll find an infinite number of planets just like earth, its really hard to the human mind to grasp the entirety of infinity.
hellothere13
so.
((just to let you know, im not good at spelling!))
-because it is human nature to turn on, shun, or destoy what we do not understand. Anything forgein or unknown, we believe is bad.
-our minds cannot comprehend these thoughts, because it is outside what we know.
-ugh, my brain hurts!! i want to say one thing.
the line between genius and insanity is very thin, and often undistinguishable.
chelseaisapigeon
I think that the life of people and even the human race will end. Possibly life on the whole planet. But I think that the universe will continue for infinity years.
