Full Version: Video Game Forum Guidelines - READ BEFORE POSTING
Smosh Forums > General > Video Games
Ashuku
The rules for this forum are very much like that of the music forum.

- You're allowed to make a thread about any Video Game you want. But check to see if there isn't one already made first.

- If you do post a thread about a specific video game, try to make the initial post at least semi-lengthy, and detailed. Post a short summary of what you do in the game, or what you liked about it. Don't post something like, "Who likes <Insert game here>", because that just becomes multiple pages of posts consisting of 1-word answers. And that's not a discussion at all.

- If you disagree with something please try to at least give a reason why. Posts like, "<Insert game here> Sucks!" Ends up turning into just a big'ol flame war. Posting a reason for you disliking something transforms a flame war into a semi-intelligent argument, which to me can actually be fun.

- Don't make polls or threads about which game in a certain genre is better. There's no "best" game in a genre, it's all about personal opinion. That goes for comparing 2 games with each other, as well as just singling out which game is best in a certain genre.

- Don't make a thread asking people what their favorite video game (Or video game system) is. We have those, and we really don't even need those ones.

-Do not post links or make threads about anything illegal. You will be banned if you do so. We do not condone piracy, in ANY form. You will be banned if you do so.

Have fun.

Well even though it's terrible, it can have an own thread. That's just different opinions. If I liked Runescape I could possibly made a thread about it no matter how much others think it sucks.

Still, I'm sure I've seen atleast 3 Runescape-threads so far.

What i'm saying is some of the rules aren't being enforced. There's a favorite video game thread, even though the rules clearly say "no favorite video game threads"

Since I don't know where to else to post this, I'll do it here. And I'm sorry if this belongs somewhere else. As far as I know, there isn't any sort of "Help" center here.

Just yesterday I started a "Gears of War" thread. Then I left, paid a visit to the forums after a few hours, and to my surprise, found that the thread I started got CLOSED. (I wasn't that surprised actually, I had a feeling it would happen for no good reason) I specifically stated IN my post to direct me to an existing thread regarding the video game I was talking about. I also stated that I preformed an entire-forum search for other GOW threads, and found NO thread at all that discusses the first game. There was a "Gears of War 2" topic (asking people if they were excited about it coming out), and a topic about GOW COMING OUT for the PC. Other than that, I found no major thread devoted to Gears of War. It's as simple as that. But wait... do I get a post in the thread notifying me about the REASON why it was closed? How about a private message?

The answer is NO. I got zilch. Zippo, Nada, none, nothing, zero.

Let me ask the question: How come every single thread that is closed in the Video Game forum (of the ones I have seen, and I have seen many) doesn't have a mods post at the end of it? You know, something brief that explains to people WHY the thread was actually closed? Do mods expect thread makers to figure out the reason for the closure themselves? What if they DON'T find a reason? Do mods like leaving the members of this forum confused and angry? Do mods expect members to just accept the thread closure and move on?

I have read the VG rules THOROUGLY, and I am now firmly in the camp that I have done absolutely nothing wrong which would justify a closing of the kind of thread I started. Note: I totally agree with the fact that a thread that clearly breaks the rules should be closed. But what I DISAGREE with is the fact that a thread should be quickly closed for no good reason. Even more, one that has no MOD post whatsoever giving the thread maker a good reason WHY the thread was closed. It makes the mods look lazy... like they are half asleep or something like that.

I spent almost half an hour going over every rule, searching for threads, making sure that what the thread I create WILL NOT get closed. And yet, almost instantly after I post the thread, it gets closed like it was nothing! I am totally outraged! Look at what I said in my post. Did you even read the whole thing?

This wouldn't have been such a large problem if you had somehow let me know the REASON for closing the thread. I wouldn't be here typing today if one of you mods took a couple minutes out of your time to do that. To give me a reason that I understand and learn a lesson from. How are some people not supposed to make a mistake again if they don't know why their mistake was a mistake?

I'll stop there. And I'm sorry for lashing out at whoever. I just had to get it out there. I would still appreciate it if I was informed by a mod (preferrably the one who closed it) on why he/she closed the thread.

I anticipate a post back explaining how wrong I am in this situation. Maybe even how I shouldn't "mouth off". Or maybe not. But whatever...

Thanks for reading.
Frank
@Jello

The only reason I could think of is that you haven't had sufficient information about the game. And these guidelines are similar to the music discussion ones, telling you to write some information about a band or artist.
You could've written about the background story, genre and basic things like that.

Plus, there's a huge amount of threads closed all the time here. If I was a mod, I personally would've gotten tired of motivationg my actions all the time.
funnyman2
There's also the fact that it's been done.

Well, In the Grand Theft Auto thread, someone posts, in 1 line, telling people to discuss the game. He had no more information posted than I did (IMO a lot less), and yet the thread is still open. By the way, I don't really understand that rule. It doesn't seem fair to be, but... it isn't for me to decide what rules should be in place here. So... if you still wish to keep it closed... then whatever. But that is your choice... there really is no good reason for you to keep it closed. But, you are a mod, so you can do whatever you want.

funnyman2
Like I said in my first post (which I took down, I will put it back up soon), that thread isn't devoted to the discussion of Gears of War 1. It's about Gears of War 2 and information about that soon-to-come-out game. To me that doesn't justify why my thread was closed.

By the way, I DO have sufficient info about the game. I play it all the time! But it's a discussion! Is there really a point in providing information? The people who have played it can talk about it in that thread... what do they need information for? I don't think that is the place for it.

The GTA thread was made before the game forum even existed, and was moved here from GD.

and what frank said was probably right. Dont take it so hard. Ain't that big of a deal.

I don't want to start a big discussion or anything but I just want to know why my command and conquer got closed. I did check the guidelines and I can't find the reason.I will admit that it might have been because nobody likes it and I will accept that.

Too true, Ashuku, too true. It really is terrible. Why? BECAUSE I SAID SO XD, but in all seriousness it is probably one "game" I may never play again. I have spent more time on a Dora the Explorer game than RuneScape (That Dora game actually kind of hard, how could they expect small children to beat that beast of a GBA game?)
