10 All Time Best Movies About High School

I love high school movies; I get older, they stay the same age. Yes they do. So I decided to put together a list of my picks for the 10 best movies about high school. Feel free to let me know what you think by tweeting at me @danborrelli or leaving a comment below.

10. BRICK

An amazing noir about drugs, sex, and some guy named Brain who may or may not exist. Brick is one of those movies you find yourself thinking about for months after you watch it. And it brought back the return of JGL as an adult, and who doesn’t love that!?

9. . WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER

You know that one joke from that one movie? Well it probably started here. Everything about this movie is incredible. It’s Air Plane for high school kids and it’s great. The kids from The State, a 90s MTV sketch show, but their brain power together to pull off a fantastic comedy that makes light of everything we take so seriously as a teenager and beyond.

8. AMERICAN GRAFFITI

Apparently there is just something to having “American” in a movie title. In this case, it’s George Lucas’ attempt and defining a generation that had already grown up. It was a great movie that changed the way Hollywood portrayed young people. Plus Harrison Ford is awesome in it!

7. HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE

The best parts of these movies are the winter months. The social problems, talking to girls, competing in a competition designed to nearly kill students far older than oneself… You know, typical high school stuff.

6. CAN’T HARDLY WAIT

Seth Green is a boss in this movie and there’s nothing better than falling in love with Jennifer Love Hewitt for 90 minutes. Every high school boy has been the victim of their own crush whether they admit it or not, and every high school girl has been the target of a boy’s crush whether they know it or not. And some lessons are best learned at an airport.

5. THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER

I saw this movie at a small screening with like 6 other people and it was amazing. My immediate reaction was, “Oh man that’s cool, they made a movie about me and everyone I know from high school.” It’s had it’s run On Demand and I’m pretty sure is available on Netflix. And it’s worth it. Every awkward feeling is thoroughly examined in this ensemble piece that everyone can relate to in some way. CHECK IT OUT! It’s like Can’t Hardly Wait meets Before Sunrise.

4. SAY ANYTHING

You know you’ve at least THOUGHT about doing the boombox thing…

3. MEAN GIRLS

A hilarious albeit spot-on look at the behavioral patterns of the modern American female. This movie really feels like a Nat Geo documentary look at the psyche of high school girls it’s so damn accurate. Lindsay Lohan is perfect, as is the writing. And trust me, this movie is equally as entertaining for guys as it is for girls. Because it just reinforces our theory that you people are all crazy.

2. DAZED AND CONFUSED

I talked about this in a recent article also, but to recap, Richard Linklater made this movie about kids in the 70s in the mid 90s and it’s a fantastic representation of how life in high school never changes. A sort of recreation of American Graffiti, Dazed and Confused follows around several different students all out to find a good time. And just like high school, 90 percent of it takes place in cars and at a water tower.

1. THE BREAKFAST CLUB

You have to see this movie if you haven’t. I’m gonna assume that you have. I’m pretty sure they just issue it to you at puberty along with a copy of Catcher in the Rye and braces. This movie is a study of not only our culture, but now our past. It’s where a lot of young parents were when they were growing up and will continue to show younger generations that all their problems, all their issues, and all their insecurities are timeless and shared. Something we all hate to need in high school.
