The 7 Most Annoying Things People Say Around New Years

The new year is a time of new beginnings, of reinventing ourselves, and of saying annoying, overly peppy phrases. You probably heard some on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day, and there are more you’ll be hearing all throughout January. The one constant about every new year is that people say the same old annoying phrases. Here are seven of the most annoying things people say around New Year's.

1. "New Year, New You!"

People at gyms really love to say this. I took an exercise class a couple years ago on New Year's Day and the instructor kept shouting, "New Year New You!" in my face even though I was perfectly happy with the old me, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

2. "New Year, New Me!"

ALMOST as annoying as "New Year, New You!" but at least it’s not telling someone else what to do. Still, it’s obnoxious. You’re the same person you were last year and it’s going to take more than the steady progression of time to change that.

3. "Happy New Year!" but it’s February

People say "Happy new year" too long into the new year. Once the year is 1/12 of the way through, it’s not that new anymore.

4. "Making a few changes for 2018, if you don't hear from me, you're one of them."

People love to announce their new years Facebook culls with vaguely threatening messages about how they hate the majority of their friends. I’m not afraid of you unfriending me, bro. Go for it. New year, new you.

5. "I can’t wait for 2017 to be over, 2018 will be so much better!"

I’ll never forget people saying how they couldn’t wait for 2016 to be over since that was the year a bunch of celebrities died, even though 2017 was going to be the year that Donald Trump actually became f*cking President of the United States, so obviously 2017 was going to be worse. And it was! 2017 still benefited from having Obama’s budget though, so 2018 will be worse than 2017 as we fully experience the ramifications of having a balding toddler as President. And if you’re not American, well, sorry. He’s gonna be a problem for you too.

6. "2018 is going to be MY year!"

There are a lot of other people who are going to be living in 2018, you cannot have it all to yourself.

7. "See you next year!"

People say this on December 31st when they’re not going to see you until January 1st. It’s a joke that is never funny, but we all keep saying it. I totally say this one too, but I know it’s annoying.
