Critics FREAK Over Rihanna's Violent New Video
Popstar Rihanna is in a bit of hot water this morning with advocacy groups that work to combat violence and violent imagery in the media.
The video for her latest single "Man Down" is just way "too much" in the opinions of groups like The Parents Television Council, Industry Ears and Enough Is Enough Campaign who all joined together to wag their collective fingers of shame at domestic violence victim Rihanna. They condemn the video and are urging Viacom (BET's parent company) to pull it off the air.
Rihanna fired back on Twitter...
She defended her new music vid.
So what has these parent groups so upset?
Well, the video that has a very Reggae feel and sound, starts with Rihanna shooting a man in the head in the middle of a crowded train station.
The rest of the video is a flashback, showing us what led this girl to take such extreme action.
Her violent and abusive boyfriend physically assaults her.
She fights back.
But he's bigger and stronger and ultimately overpowers her.
And then she dances around, lookin' sexy in a boat for a little while.
And then she spends some time thinking about what she's done. When you're in a boat in a small, dark, abandoned lagoon, you have lots of time to think about the murder you committed yesterday.
Her character seems to come to the conclusion that murder is NOT the answer and regrets what she has done. The ultimate message of the video is that violence is not the answer to violence. Did these parental groups even watch the video? Did they bother to Google the lyrics?
Here, watch the video and tell me what you think. Is this too much for your fragile young mind to deal with?
Did your mind just explode? Has Rihanna's video inspired you to commit homicide? Oh God, what have I done? I should have never shown you this music video! The parental groups warned me that you couldn't handle it and I didn't believe them! If only I had listened to "the man" this one time!
Paul Porter, co-founder of Industry Ears said, "If Chris Brown shot a woman in his new video, the world would stop. Rihanna should not get a pass. The video is far from broadcast worthy."
And to Paul I say YES, if Chris Brown shot a woman in his new video people would freak the freak out BECAUSE CHRIS BROWN IS WOMAN BEATER and it's a little too close to the truth.
Rihanna's video depicts a fantasy that a lot of victims of domestic violence have. Last time I checked it still wasn't illegal to fantasize about robbing a bank... or killing someone... unlike Chris Brown... Rihanna does not act on her fantasies.
