Facebook Kicks Kids Off Their Site!
Look, everyone knows that you're supposed to be at least 13-years-old to use Facebook, but that doesn't keep thousands of ineligible kids from creating illegal accounts every day.
Facebook even admits that they kick about 20,000 underage users from their site every single day. So much for the rules, eh?
Facebook started out as a site for college kids, but at this point your annoying little sister, your youth group pastor and even your old granny have profiles.
According to some fancy studies almost HALF of all 12-year-olds in the United States have Facebook accounts even though they don't meet the age requirements set by the site. Which proves that nobody should trust a 12-year-old.
It's not really all that shocking to me. Anybody can say anything and lie to create an account. Not to mention they offer all sorts of fun games for kids to play... Farmville and Animal Party!?!? I mean you can't tell me that Animal Party was created for people over 13... that's like having an adults only candy store and sends a mixed message from Facebook.
"We don't want you on our site and here are a bunch of fun colorful games made just for you, that you can't play." I call bullcandy on that!
So what's the big deal?
It's not really a big deal but some of the content just isn't appropriate for children under 13. I use curse words and then I remember that I'm also Facebook friends with my 9-year-old niece and my Nana and I feel dirty.
Another problem is that there are so many predators out there...
People break the rules of Facebook all the time. But you have to remember that just like you might be lying about your age... other people are lying about who they are... Sex offenders aren't allowed on Facebook either, but if kids aren't following the rules, what are the odds that actual criminals are going to follow the rules?
What do you think about Facebook's policy regarding people under 13? Are you under 13 and do you have a Facebook account? Do you think Facebook is sending mixed messages with games like Animal Party? We want to know what you think about Facebook's unfriendly youth policy... is it protecting kids or just age discrimination?
