Fantasy Football: The Geek In Us All

It’s about that time of year again for those of us who never played Magic or Dungeons and Dragons to “get our geek on”…

I’m talking about Fantasy Football Season.

Fantasy Football couldn’t exist without the NFL, which is undeniably cool. So how did Fantasy football get so geeky? Well, most of us are sports fans who aren’t athletic enough to play actual sports, so we live vicariously through the athletic achievements of others… Kinda’ like sportscaster Chris Berman.

To prepare, we do statistical research… Did you know that Peyton Manning completed 393 passes in 571 attempts, and threw 33 touchdowns in 2009?... How nerdy does that sound? The only things missing from that statement are thick-rimmed glasses and acne medication.

How it works: You draft players from around the league, and their performance on game days earns your team points… It’s like Sports Pokemon: Collect them all!

While Fantasy Football is heavily sports related, the only physical work you have to do is the click of a mouse in deciding who to start and who to sit. So put that asthma medication down, you won’t need it.

Every week you play someone else in your league. So to keep things interesting it helps to up the trash talking.

All that said, you’re ready for your fantasy team. Just don’t take the word “fantasy” too seriously. I don’t know about you, but a bunch of muscular, sweaty men touching each other isn’t quite my “fantasy”.
