The 'Game of Thrones' Guys' Star Wars Movie Will Be AWESOME (If They Adapt Another, Better Writer's Story)
HBO's fantasy epic Game of Thrones is so popular, we were able to find 44 goddamn memes after Googling around for the standard 20 minutes we generally spend making our galleries. It shouldn't be super surprising then that another insanely popular franchise put out an offer for the show's creative team. Disney announced yesterday that Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss would be helming another series of Star Wars movies, seperate from Rian Johnson's planned trilogy and the upcoming stand-alone Han Solo movie. Ladies and gentlemen, very soon we'll have more Star Wars movies than there are flavors in those infinite soda machines they have at Blaze Pizza.
Think about it! A Star Wars movie by the guys who made Game of Thrones! What could be better?! This movie is going to KICK. SOME SERIOUS. ASS.
... so long as it's is written by someone other than the guys who made Game of Thrones.
As directors, Benioff and Weiss are able to build other worlds and can get some truly amazing performances out of their actors. But as writers? Well... se... here's the thing. The seasons of Game of Thrones based on George RR Martin's books were richly-textured explorations of complex characters. Once Benioff and Weiss ran out of source material to adapt, things got rough. I'm talking characters we love being horrificially brutalized for no reason-kind of rough. We do not need to see Jabba the Hutt assault a Twi'lek only for the story to focus on Admiral Ackbar, who was watching for some reason.
But that's not to say the Benioff and Weiss Star Wars will be bad! There are a lot of good Star Wars out there! Maybe they could do a trilogy based on the stellar RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic? Even my asshole friends who hated The Last Jedi wanted to see some book series called the Thrawn trilogy adapted. Hell, I could even get down with a Shadows of the Empire movie based on that old Nintendo 64 game.
