Ian McKellan Wants to Play Gandalf in Amazon's 'Lord of the Rings' Show
Lord of the Rings is the gift that just keeps on giving. Just because it's already been the source for an award-winning, blockbuster film series, doesn't mean people aren't clamoring for more! Well I guess they were, because in November, Amazon announced they were answering the call for more. The streaming service said they were planning to produce a Lord of the Rings TV series.
According to Sharon Tal Yguado – Amazon’s head of scripted programming:
“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen. We are honoured to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”
Um, ok. So more of the Tolkien universe I guess. People immediately started pondering what the series will do differently and are pining away for more character driven narratives. And as with any big project based on a beloved source material, another popular topic is casting.
Well one of the most iconic castings from the film series was Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf. Kind of hard to replace if you ask me. BUT MAYBE WE WON'T HAVE TO!!
Ian recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show and was asked about the TV reboot and here's what went down:
Graham: “Amazon is doing a TV series of Lord of the Rings. Now isn’t that annoying? That there’s going to be another Gandalf in town?”
Ian: “What do you mean, another Gandalf?”
This prompted Graham to ask if that meant he was involved. Ian responded:
“I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old [yet].”
HELL FRIGGIN' YEAH.
UMMMMM, HELLO AMAZON, DO NOT FRIGGIN' BLOW THIS.
