8 of the Most Truly Evil Movie Characters of All Time
Most movie guys are driven by legitimate reasons — they're mentally ill, dealing with their complex past, or just have a different perspective than the protagonist. But true evil has no rhyme or reason, no justification. I wanted to find the absolute most evil movie characters of all time (not including horror movie villains, or else the list would just be Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, and the Saw dude). Here are eight of the most soullessly evil movie characters of all time.
1) Anton Chigurh - No Country for Old Men
Anton Chigurgh is a hitman without remorse. He kills or tries to kill almost every single person he talks to in No Country for Old Men. Anton often decides whether or not to kill someone with a coin toss, as human life seems as irrelevant to him as heads or tails. You add in that hairstyle and smile and you know that Anton is someone you never want to meet.
2) Hannibal Lecter – The Silence of the Lambs
It’s hard to have a list of most evil movie characters without the brilliant and savage Hannibal Lecter. He’s a genius psychiatrist and a serial-killing cannibal. He thinks being rude is worse than murder. I, on the other hand, think people obsessed with manners are almost as bad as cannibalistic serial killers.
3) Daniel Plainview – There Will Be Blood
Daniel Plainview will use and destroy anyone in order to get what he wants. And if you weren’t convinced that he’s a truly bad egg, the last ten minutes of There Will Be Blood will set you straight. Daniel Plainview doesn’t have a skewed moral compass, he has no moral compass at all.
4) Bill the Butcher – Gangs of New York
Daniel Day-Lewis is a little too good at being the human incarnation of evil. Unlike many of the characters on this list, Bill the Butcher has a moral compass that guides him. Unfortunately, it’s a morality based in racism and nativism. He's basically an old-timey version of a Donald Trump fan who murders with knives.
5) The Joker – The Dark Knight
The Joker is one of those men who just wants to watch the world burn. He destroys for the sake of destruction. Heath Ledger himself called his character a "psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy". Playing the Joker also led Ledger to lock himself in a motel room for weeks, immersing himself in the demented character. Some speculate the ensuing depression played a part in his accidental prescription drug overdose six months before The Dark Knight was released. If that’s true, then the Joker might be the only fictional character to take a real life.
6) Hans Landa – Inglourious Basterds
Hans Landa is terrifying because he can be charming, joyous, and incredibly cruel all at the same time. This is a man who knows exactly what he’s doing and feels no remorse for the blood on his hands. He’s not even a true Nazi believer — he chooses to go along with Nazi ideology because it helps his own personal status.
7) Alex DeLarge – A Clockwork Orange
Alex DeLarge is the kind of sociopathic delinquent who feels no remorse about clubbing an old lady to death with a giant statue of a penis. I’ll be honest, I’ve only seen the first half of A Clockwork Orange. I started watching it when I was 15 and got halfway through until I was like, “I think I’m not old enough to watch this movie” and turned it off. I’m still not old enough to watch the rest. I don’t know if I ever will be.
8) Regina George – Mean Girls
Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimized by Regina George.
