Tanning Salons Lying To Get Teen Business?

The report of a congressional investigation into tanning salons has just been released and the results are not pretty. Like over-tanned not pretty.

(source)

The investigation uncovered that the industry was lying every which way when it came to convincing new clientele to join in the craze. Investigators called posing as a fair-skinned teen interested in tanning and were routinely given misleading information. 90% of the salons called told the caller that tanning posed no health risks. 58% actually went so far as to tell the potential client that indoor tanning actually improved one's health. And 51% claimed that tanning did not increase the risk of skin cancer. 100% of those lying to teens are acting like huge a-holes. That's my own completely unscientific but 100% accurate opinion.

It would be kind of amusing that people would believe such obvious lies, if the results of those lies weren't so friggin' dangerous. The fact is the risk of getting skin cancer goes up 75% when tanning bed use starts before you turn 30. In fact since the 80's when tanning bed popularity really exploded, the rate of melanoma among young women has increased by 50%. GTL? More like GCL.  They clean these things in between clients, right? Cause I'm think using one could increase the risk of a bunch of diseases if they don't!

A lot of states have banned indoor tanning for those under the age of 18. Even more states require that minors be accompanied by their parents when getting baked in a cancer machine. Good parenting, y'all! The better choice is probably doing the old stand-by spray tan. Probably nothing dangerous about spraying yourself with golden colored chemicals that tint your skin. Although it does have the potential to leak down your leg and look super-icky. I'll just stick to being a pale white living ghost. YIKES!

I'm very pale, and don't get me wrong, I LOVE being pale. But the only problem is I have blue veins that show up a lot near my eyes. :( But I will NEVER tan. EVER. Sides, when you're 30 you get all wrinkly skin as well. Ew! Also, I think pale skin is beautiful. I hate how pale people become instantly 'ugly' because they're not tan. I mean, look at Bella Swan or the Cullens in the twilight films (yes, I know, Twilight references suck) but they look pretty, don't they?

Yep, I did have someone try to talk me into believing that tanning beds are good for you. And that the people who get skin cancer from it "aren't doing it right".

*facepalm*

TripTrep, You Are A Fucking Gay Retard, I Have Whitish-Tan Skin But Used To Be Stunningly Pale Until I Went Abroad. White Skin Is Gorgeous And People Are Lucky Not To Have Tan. Most People With Fake Tan Don't Get Girlfriends/Boyfriends Cuz They Look Ridiculous

All white people are ugly. Take the time to look nice and get tanned geez.

Tanning=stupid. By the way, some of these comments sound kinda racist. Hahaha.

Screw tans. I'm naturally fair skinned and look UNNATURAL with any kind of fake tan crap. I cannot tan for real, my skin turns red and then goes back to blinding white. Cancer free is sexy.

- look past that... it's a shame really.

I live in denmark. In scandinavia you are supposed to be fair skinned, and I actually think it is pretty! I think it's a shame that this is a "fashionable" thing to do!

The worst part is that all my friends that goes to these tanning places KNOW the risks of it, yet they think staying tanned and have a summer glow is more importent than there health.

Another thing is that when they are 30 or so there skin will look like they're wearing a head to toe icky leather suit... they also seem to

I'm pretty tan already (not from tanning) and I'd rather be lighter haha

I'm ginger so I'd pretty much be all one colour if I started using fake tan and sun beds would just make me pink. That's my dilemma over, pale I shall stay! Hooray

It's sad that so many beautiful young women have been brainwashed to believe that their naturally fair skin is somehow unattractive! Where did this idea that light skin is ugly come from? Just from this one man's point of view, WHITE IS BEAUTIFUL!

yes, white is beautiful, it is my favorite color. it is best on people because noone can be grey, ink black, or blood red.
